How important is the right ratio?

How important is the right ratio?
How will an LT1/4l60E run if I don't reprogram the computer for a 3.73 rear end? Will it shift funny? Can I damage anything?

I would imagine the shift points will be off compared to true speed of the car. Probably no damage unless you do something stupid.
