How important is having all 3 bolts for the alternator brackets?
How important is having all 3 bolts for the alternator brackets?
I stripped the back bolt that bolts the back of the alternator to the alternator bracket that goes on the stud of the intake manifold.
I still have the other 2 bolts in, and I still have that bolt in the alternator but its stripped out so its really not doing anything.

Re: How important is having all 3 bolts for the alternator brackets?
I'm only running the 2 bolts that hold the alternator to the accessory bracket. I took off the other brackets and have had no problems for 5,000 miles. I got sick of taking off the brackets, so I just left them off.

seriouly tho, you should fix it, i dont think its critical, but i would get it done one day when you have the time to fuss with it.
Re: How important is having all 3 bolts for the alternator brackets?
I put a B-body alternator on which is a 140 amp and the one hole don't lign up for the back, so I left it off, 2 bolts here for over half a year reving to 7k RPM

You guys are really gonna get a kick out of this... but for the last 25 miles, I've been driving around with only one bolt in...
knock on wood.. no problems yet (with the alt)..
plenty of other problems atm.. one of the reasons I'm not particularly worried about the alt..

I'll join the masses with only two bolts... It's only had two bolts since i got the car, and that was at 86k. It's now got 107k and a monster stereo, no problems
Just make sure they are GNT so it doesn't flex and ruin a bearing/belt or both

i ran two bolts for about 8,000 miles until my alternator bracket broke.i got on it one night and all of the sudden i lost power steering and my ses light came on. i opened the hood and my bracket was broken right off underneath the top bolt.i guess some have better luck than others.
