How hot do the LT1s usually run?

Yesterday i was driving my truck with the new LT1 in it and it has a stock thermostat in it. well after about 30 minutes of driving on the highway it would rise up to about 220-225 with the windows down and the a/c off. But as soon as i got off the highway onto a 2 lane country road it stuck at 180 and stayed there. Why would it get hotter on the highway?

Thats very unusual. Sounds like your radiator isnt getting enough airflow through it.

same thing happened to me... i changed the thermo nothing... turns out the lil plastic clip on bolts came loose so my airdam ended up covering my radiator... went from 230 to 170 lol

I don't know if S-10s were bottome feeders like the f and y-cars. But it sounds like your engine is running cooler off the interstate becuase your fans are kicking on (stock programming fans will not kick on above 40mph). On the interstate there is a lack of air moving across the radiator to cool it down. On F-Bodys for example there is a plastic air dam under the car that direct air up to the radiator. You might need to devise a way to direct more air up to the radiator.

Same here. Mine will get up to 225 sitting in traffic and around town but will go no higher than 185 going down the highway... and my fans are wired always on and a 160* stat. I thought that traveling down the interstate there would be more air traveling across the raditor?

Your fans are always on and you still get to 225?!

Always on is stupid. They will impede airflow at anything above 45mph

No. The fan energy is still additive to the entering air stream, and increases the velocity of the air through the radiator. Stop the fan, and you will have an obstruction.

I don't think it impedes so much that you will overheat. Besides whatever gets past the blockade is still more than sitting in traffic will get you. I have my single fan setup always on and my car stays at 211* in heavy traffic and 170-175 on the highway, and thats with a stock T-stat.
