How high would you have rev a XE 230/236 on stock heads?

Just trying to find something with a little more than a CC503, but not have to rev it any higher than 6200-6300ish. I was hoping this would give a happy medium between a CC503, and cams like the CC306 and GM847.

Anyone have one? Shift Points? Dyno graph? Thanks.

Cams get discussed in here every day.

From everything I read, most of the "larger" cams like the cc306 need to spin higher than 6300rpm to find their best power and at those rpm levels, head flow becomes a real issue...

for stock heads, the cc503 seems to be about as aggressive as you'll find for shifting around the range you're looking at...

... Thats kinda what I figured. And not alot of people run this cam.

But there was a old thread, I tried finding, a while back, and most of the people said it peaked at 5800ish and were shifting at 6300ish ? So I may have to look into this a little more still. It still is a good bit smaller than a CC306 or GM847.

I'm going with the cc503 since mine's mainly stock and I don't really want(need) to rev the wiz out of it.

(I'm doing a new opti and waterpump right now to get it back on the road and get an exempt sticker.)

The engine is coming out in the fall and that's when the cc503 is going in there.

I looked at tons of threads and opinions, and the cc503 is where I'm starting.

I've had the Comp Cams XE 230/236 cam with .544" I lift and .555" E lift (with 1.6:1 Pro Magnum roller rockers), on my car with both completely stock LT1 heads, and ported and polished LT1 heads. (Please see my signiture, below).

At the time I did my cam swap, I knew that someday I would be doing heads also, and so ...... I wanted a cam I could "grow in to". If I remember correctly, back in the days I ran this cam on totally stock LT1 heads, (i.e. intake flow at .550" lift was right around 215 CFM), it pretty much was all done by 5,700 - 5,800 RPM. With my current ported heads, (i.e. intake flow at .550" lift is 263 CFM), it is "all in" by 6,200 - 6,300 RPM. Since I'm still on the stock short block, I have my rev limit set at 6,650 RPM, and my shift light at 6,400 RPM, and ....... it seems to work out just fine.

If you get more replies from people who actually have run this cam, I think you'll find that they will agree that you don't have to exceed 6,200/6,300 RPM to get full power from this cam, even with P&P'd heads. Believe me with stock heads you won't have to go anywhere above 5,800 RPM with this cam.

Good Luck! with whatever cam you choose.

Well, he has had 2-1/2 years to decide which way to go.

Videos ...... no. Dyno graphs ...... I had one(1) chassis dyno pull done on the car just after I added the P&P'd heads, (about 3-4 years ago???), but I can't find it now. Do a search on user name kmook from about 5-6 years ago when Ken ran an LT1 vehicle. His car and dyno graphs were what made me consider the XE 230/236 cam in the first place. He had a stock shortblock LT1 with the 230/236 cam and heads that made just over 400 RWHP, if I remember correctly.

Yeah a buddy of mine put down 411rwhp/365tq to the wheels through an A4 with this cam and LE2 heads. Made up about 20hp in the tune alone so alot of any cammed with without heads need a spot on tune to get the right numbers. I am debating this came too but i think ill have to do some serious messing around with the tunning the pass the sniffer test. Between xe503 224/230 or this xe 230/236 cam.

Anyone have any luck passing this cam on a sniffer test?
