How to get the steam tube plugs out of the back of the head?

Ok I know im dumb for even running w/o one, the previous "owner" took the damn thing off, and I want to put it back on but I cant get the plugs out. I keep breaking 1/4" drive extensions trying to get it off. Any suggestions?

if your talking about the coolant passage in th back of the heads you need a good open wrench that fits PERFECT! and then just pull hard until they come out.

So the square is 1/4"? (I didn't really know) Have you tried a 1/4" breaker bar? If the heads were off, you could take them to a shop.

i broke two 1/4" breaker bars, a few 3/8 to 1/4" adapters and a 1/4" extension. I think they welded them in lol.

There was a recent post on this on CF, and somebody said they are 5/16"

This is what you need:

Even with the right tool they are supposedly not real fun.

If you can get heat in that area, they may loosen up any sealant that was sed.

I tried torching and wax melted into it,was breaking my tools also on some of these little bastard plugs.

I got a high speed lathe bit from a friend, tool steel real hard stuff. They can be had in 1/4".Nice and square and hard. I put that in the plug and a big cresent(adjustable open end) on it and took the little bastards out real quick.
These bits will even bite down deep into the socket for plugs that have been slightly uuumm F'ed with several times

The plugs in the sides of the heads sometimes are not 3/8' drive capable either. I found one that needed 8mm square. There is a KD socket set with these metric squares$$. Nothing a real good extractor with a 8mm tip couldnt get though
