how to fix very low oil pressure?
how to fix very low oil pressure?
hey i have a bit of an issue...
ive come to the conclusion that my car does the rough idleing (at stop lights after a while of running) because it seems that the oil pressure is so low that the car throws up some RPMS to give it more pressure (hence, they move simultaniously) now, when i first start up the car its fine -about half way. and at every stop light i come to a complete stop at, it drops little by little, untill it start doing the surging thing...
so my question is, what is causing or how do i fix the low oil pressure?
thanks

Re: how to fix very low oil pressure?
How many miles? If we are talking about a stock bottom end it may just be too loose. Time for a rebulid?
How low does the pressure get? Yes your psi will be related to rpms, but you could have another issue making the motor bog. If its bogging becuase of low oil pressure than the damage is probably already done.

Re: how to fix very low oil pressure?
some change short of 150k, and the worst if seen it is laying on the red line which is also the only time its ever bogged. also, i use 20-50 castrol synthetic and i have a fram (x2 or something) filter.
how do i fix the bottom end problem (if thats it)?
and could that be the reason why the undercarriage of my car looks like a tampon filled with oil in spots?

Re: how to fix very low oil pressure?
Your low idle isn't happening because of low oil pressure, it's the other way around. If your car is about to stall, the oil pressure will fall because the pump is moving so slow that there is little pressure. Believe me, this is a far better situation than what you suspect.
There are way too many things that could make your engine run poorly at idle than can be listed in a message. The place to start is to look at your engine intake and manifold area closely to see if anything is detached or loose . After that, it is getting the pcm scanned. The surging at idle is the pcm's attempt to keep the car from stalling. As things get worse the pcm will eventually not be able to do this. You could have a vacuum leak somewhere or the idle air control pintel may be dirty and sticking etc. etc....
Good luck with this as the oil leak would be a priority to uncover the source.

Re: how to fix very low oil pressure?
I would ditch the Fram filter. Get a Wix or AC-Delco. Also, sometimes the pressure sensor reports low pressure as it gets old (and when it is hot). You might try changing it out.
Re: how to fix very low oil pressure?
Try using a Puralator Pure One oil filter. This filter should increase your oil pressure because of the thickness of the filter inside. If your oil pressure still doesn't increase, and you are certain it is not motor related, then chances are that you need a new oil pump.
If you have normal or good oil pressure during other driving conditions other than just at idle, I would say that your oil pump is fine, and unfortunatly it is probably something else causing the low RPM dives, and as a consequense, low oil pressure.
