Manual transmissions in general seem to hold up better than automatics. For example, the stock 4l60e breaks under stock power.

Instead of getting a built up auto tranny, why not get a built up manual?
If you do some searching on the internet you'll find there are a hand full of Extremely modded Dodge Vipers running low 9's and high 8's on T-56's.

The question is, how many of them do you think they go through each racing season? And can you imagine the kind of budget you have to have to build a dodge viper like those

Tanner ran 9's on his T-56 though http://www.bmrfabrication.com/FeatureCars/Tanner.htm

How much do they weigh and how hard are they hooking and how many clutches do they replace a week and trannys per year.
The clutch is the secret to not tearing things up.Rather change clutches than tranny rebuilds.
Ya get a clutch that slips on engagement to take the shock away kinda like NHRA Top Fuel.
Either way it is expensive. Been there done that.

Ya can't build a T56 to handle 900-1000FWHP and it don't take near that to run 9's.Ya can run 9's with 650-675FWHP in a stick car depending on weight.

I'm saying the same thing man. I agree with ya.

I'm just stating that it has been done. But the question is how long is that t-56 and clutch lasting them.

If I were in his boat I would probably say the hell with it and run a powerglide with a trans break. Id also have a 4 link fabbed up in that byotch.

The strongest T56's are the G-Force trannies. Budget about $5K for a fully built one plus another $1,500 for a clutch and driveshaft and ~$2k for a rear end and you will have as strong a T56 as you can get. You will still have an aluminum bell housing, which should make you a little nervous. However, since N2O setups aren't too high revving typically, a major clutch explosion is less likely.

How strong is it? It's less a matter of hp than of traction. If you stick with a 10" tire, you probably won't break it and even a stocker will last for a while if the 60' times are above 1.5 seconds.

i happen to personally know someone that dynoed 980rwhp and was spinning on the dyno....easy 1100rwhp car on a t56 and its daily driven and can prolly find links with vidio to back up my statement

thats like saying the stock 10bolt doesnt last....ive been going 10s in this car for over a year and its 160k mile rear....and i can give you a huge list of drivers doing the same....

Daily driving or any driving on street tires isn't what breaks them. It is violent launches witrh sticky tires on a prepped surface. My stock T56 lasted just fine in a 4,000lb car trapping in the mid 140's, but I never really got violent with it at the strip. I I had, it wouldn't have lasted a day. You can't logically talk about how much power any compoenet can handle without specifying the conditions of use.

That kinda power won't take you anywhere without the proper supporting cast. Rear, trans, suspension, safety equipment.

Lot more to address than just power - see this a lot - guys just throwing parts at an engine and being disappointed that the pig runs 13.2's @ 125mph with 2.forever 60's

i agree...but this same person did take his daily driver on a 100 mile drive to mir in maryland...hit a 9.80 and drove back another 100 miles...he runs at the track every chance he gets when something isnt broken...but with that much power something always seems to break on him...including 1 t56....but over all i think hes done good with it....

I'd throw a TH400 w/brake in it and not worry near as much as I would with a T56. Not to mention the consitency you get with an automatic if you're bracket racing the car.

Re: How fast will 400rwhp and a 300shot take me in the 1/4mile?

It looks like as I approach 900rwhp, the t56 will become a bad idea to have. simply becaue a t56 to handle that much power will cost me about 5500 with the clutch.

It also looks like the manual trannies cost alot more period. However, they are great for daily driving, and that is mostly what I'll be doing. I couldn't stand to have an auto tranny that turned 3000rpms going 55mph. If it was a race car, I wouldn't mind. But my goal is to turn this into a street killer with occasional drag strip use.

In conclusion, I believe that the setup I am going for (custom grind cam w/le3 heads, 12:1 CR) which should make around 500rwhp + the 300shot of nitrous will be just the limit that the t56 can take. Keep in mind that when I say that, I mean every once in a while. I will probably only see the strip once a year.

I do have one more question. Will a spec stage 4 clutch hold up to 700rwhp? Where can I get one of those soft-engaging clutches if the spec isn't strong enough? It seems like the nhra style clutch is the solution to the problem.

I thought you were talking about a drag car. There is NO WAY my *** would spray a 300 shot on the street. I guarantee you that is asking for nothing but trouble. Street tires will NOT hold up to that kinda use.

I run DR's on the street and they do pretty good. Isn't that a street tire?
Some down here run slicks when cruising.
