how far can i go with my le1 heads ??
had an le1 head/cam setup, threw a rod,
new setup will be a forged 383 or 396 lower end, and a new cam,
i'm looking at the le3 cam. i think before i was around 390-400 rwhp, and i just can't believe that i'm reading on here that a much bigger cam, and boring my block will only net me another 20 or so rwhp.
just curious how much rwhp i can take my le1 heads to,,
afr's aren't in the budget...
thanks

its doubtful that you were around 390-400, thats like what a WELL tuned le2 or 3 setup will do, which have better heads and a bigger cam, but you would probably want to go with a 3 on a 383 or 396

i was really happy with my le1 setup, never dyno'd it, or got a really good tune. i had misc. problems with it, when it finally ran right for the last 2 weeks, it was beating my buddies street tire 12.5 car...so it was around a 12.4 car or so. i was very happry, that cam sounds good.
but ya true i never dyno'd it so i'll never now, i just want to get around 11.50 or so NA

I bet LE himself could tell you exactly what kind of numbers you could push with LE1 heads and a LE3 cam, in either motor. It does hurt a bit to think that much more in displacement and cam wouldnt give you much more. I would hope that you'd push 430-445 rwhp. If you decide to sell the heads let me know, since I am already thinking about taking the cam off your hands. You didnt hit a voodoo medicine man with that H/C kit did you, seems almost cursed
If nothing else I know Spinner is running 11.7's with a XE230/236 with LE2-3 heads. I would think that the displacement would make up for the head flow, but then again I am just a bolt on boy.
Either way good luck.

Re: how far can i go with my le1 heads ??
I have some LE3 heads going on a 383 and he was telling me that his best heads would make peak HP around 6100 on a 383 and around 6800 on a 355. And i am running a 847 cam. He guessed i would make around 420rwhp. Now Im not for sure but i think the Le1 heads flow around 255/150. Mine flow 276/193 and he told me i would peak at 6100 around 420rwhp. So im not so sure you will make any more hp with a 383. You might find your hp peaking under 5700 with your heads and no better Peak #s. Better tq though. I wouldnt put them on a 383 i think you might be a little disapointed in your set up. But lloyed will know best. I know the cross sectional area is low for Lt1 castings wich makes them peak sooner on big motors no matter what the flow. Has to do with the engine gulping air instead a nice flow like on a flow bench. Call lloyed he will steer you right he is an awesome guy.

Interesting. I guess that the peak RPM would be even lower on the 396, and I think that peak would be way too low for racing purposes.
So how much for your LE1 setup?

Re: how far can i go with my le1 heads ??
you will make just as much power with a 355 and the le3 cam and you will will the 383 because the stock cast cant supply enough air to feed a 383.
there one person who makes 423 rwhp on a stock bottom end end with le2 heads and a le3 cam. just do a 355 and be done with it, and save money on machine work.
now if you had a set of afrs it would be alot different
