How far back should a muffler be?

I just finished butchering my y-pipe to fit the Cat on the end of it. My only problem now is that where the muffler attaches with the kit there's about 10-11 inches of room. Is that too close to to the muffler to place the cat?

I have never heard that you need xx inches between the cat and muffler. I dont see why it would make any differece how close it is.

The only distance that technically really matters is that between the cat and the engine itself. A manufacturer generally wants the cats as close as possible to get them to operating temperature quickly.

Yeah, that story is also an interesting one.

When you look at how far back the stock cat is for mteh manifolds I scratch my head when I look at the Longtubes and how far back the Cat is. It seems like it would be closer. I don't get the Long tube location vs. The short tube location.. but all I can say is that I'm goign to try the single cat in the I pipe location. I'm out of ideas and money, plus I like my cut outs.

On my car I have turn down billet mufflers, and they are just about a foot from the cat, they stop a couple of inches before my rearend.
