How exactly does cai get cold air?

I have a moroso air intake taht goes all the way down outside of the engine bay. I noticed that there doesnt seem to be a way for cold air to even get in there so i was wondering if itd be a good idea to cut out the bottom of the chamber or make a small scoop down there. I think it would make sense to cut an opening so air can get in and make a scoop to direct air. I know this is by no means a ram but i think it could help a little.

I helps alot, cut the hole underneath and put an airdam behind the hole it will dramaticly lower you intake air temp.

Now one thing im wondering is.... would a hole in the bottom creat the air to be less concentrated or something like that? Does the air box pressureize at all?

Re: How exactly does cai get cold air?

I too have a '97 Z and installed a "deep" CAI (ebay). I removed ALL the stock plastic air "junk" and the filter sits in a large cavity behind the driver side headlights.
If you look underneath, you will notice that the existing air dam extends far enough to where the filter lies. Examining how I too would get cold air up to the K&N filter, I saw that in front of the air dam, there were a series of slats/vents that allowed the "scooped" air to go up into the cavity where the filter sits. What I did was cut most of those slats out to have a wide open passage from the air dam up to the filter.

Don't know if that makes a difference though. My only concern is that this may allow water to be splashed up onto the filter more easily....but I don't plan on trodding through deep puddles anyway.

The main reason it works is because the stock air box is really restrictive. I just took the bottom panel completely off. I don't know if leaving it on would make all that much of a difference. Either way you will feel a big gain.

I have seen some kits that sit a filter inside the engine bay. That air is hot. Using an LPE or moroso, etc. CAI you could do this mod. Some one used a piece of tin and formed a scoop. Then cut a hole in the bottom plastic piece and mount the scoop over the hole forcing cooler air up and in. It makes sense. Only thing is driving it when its wet out. I don't drive mine in the rain and I don't know how wet a filter can get before damage occurs. I don't want to test that one out!!
