how does "check guages" light work???

i have a problem with my check guages light. it fully lights up when i start the vehicle like it should. however, the light does not totally go off. it stays partially illuminated. i did not know if this was from the guage cluster or bad wiring or what. any suggestions on how this works would be great. by the way, its a 95 z28.

Many different things can set it off.

Try and check out your gas cap sometimes it will set this light to let you know it isnt fully on.

The lamp is controlled by solid state circuitry in the gauge cluster.

That would happen to me when my alternator was about to go. Is the voltage gauge reading low?

Edit: I also had a problem after I washed my engine down one time. (No comment shoebox) Where I had gotten the small wire going to the alternator wet. The car would run fine, and the alternator was fine. But it was shorting out this little connector causing my check light to stay partially lit. Try cleaning this connector.

i took my alternator off and it was all good. however, if it is charging perfect that doesn't mean that there isn't a flaw somewhere in the alternator. the connector on the alternator was good. it also has a lot of that grease on the connector. i have no clue what they put on that connector. maybe dielectric grease?? are you guys telling me that there is no really good way to find out why this check guages light stays half way illuminated?? i guess i could try changing out my alternator for a new one. but if that isn't it, maybe i should just get a new cluster. i am not sure what to do but i sure know that i don't like that light on. also, getting it scanned should not do anything should it?? its an obd1.

SHOEBOX

by any chance have you ever had air bag, low trac, abs inopt, and e-brake light, all come on. sometimes they stay on some times they flash. this all started when i had to disconnect my battery, once i reconnected it and started the car all the dash lights went nuts. thgy will eventually all go out but it can take up to a month of daily use. this is a 95 ta m6, never had any electrial issues till this. i have enought brake fluid and all the sensor wires are connected.
figured maybe you could tell me where to look to solve this, are they all on the same curcuit? HELP

Sounds weird, but like already suggested, sometimes low voltage can cause many of the lamp to come on. Check your battery and ground connections well.
