How do you scan a 1994 ODBI??

Hi, lately i've been having an idle surge and misfires here and there. Trying to track down the issue and I'm trying to figure out if I need to buy a scanner for this thing. Went to autozone to buy an ODBI scanner but its for up to 1992 GM. I already have a ODBII scanner but I'm not sure that's gonna work either. Is there a way to use a paperclip to get the security light to flash??

Thanks,
James

No, the paperclip trick doesn't work for these cars...

The autoXray ezread 2500 works on these cars as well as the newed OBD2 and controller area network cars as well...

A regular OBD-I scanner should work on a 1994. It has the same 12 pin DLC as previous years.

Just went in to autozone and bought one. SES light will come on without the scanner plugged in. When I plug the scanner in, then turn the key on- the fans come on and the SES light DOES NOT come on at all. No blinking, no nothing. The actron booklet says I need to look in my owners manual, but I don't have one. What to do next??

Thanks,
James

Also, this scanner only has 3 prongs on it. When i was looking at http://shbox.com/1/xraycable.jpg, mine looks nothing like it (not 5 pins)

It's the wrong thing. That's really not a scanner. It's a glorified paper clip. How much did it cost? About $30? Take it back. A real scanner is going to be $100 or more.

You can find pdf versions of the owner's manuals on my website.

yeah you're gonna have to get one of those scanners that covers both OBD I and OBD II. they're out there in plenty of places you just have to find them. and they usually are more pricey than just a plain OBD II scanner. but if i could go back when i bought my OBD II scanner i would have spent the extra cash to have one that did both. Course at the time i didn't know i'd be working on OBD I cars as well...

You don't need a scanner that covers both OBD-I and OBD-II. There are used true OBD-I AutoXrays out there, cheap. Or find a used ScanMaster LT1. Real-time, bright LED display:

Or, use free scanning software, and a cable, with your laptop:

TTS DataMaster - free download, 20 free uses:

FreeScan - freedownload, unlimited uses:

Cable from AKM:

You can buy LT1_Edit for OBD-I tuning software, and it cmoes bundled with pcmcomm scanning software.

most people that use the scan master use it as a permament fixture in their car.

I did the cable and FreeScan and love it - takes alot of the guess work out of troubleshooting
