How do you remove the alternator pulley?

How do you remove the alternator pulley?

I got the big socket on there, but ofcourse when you try to loosen the nut, the whole alternator bearing wheel thing spins(like its made to do). Is there something you're supposed to do with the small bolt inside of the big one?I can get my big *** hex key in there, but its not spinning.

I got a new alternator and need to switch out pulleys, hope this solves my charging problem(wrong size belt= slipping)

Oh yea, I have the march pulley system if that matters.

You need an impact gun to get it off....I do't know about you...but in my area the local AutoZone has an impact gun...and they told me if I took the Altinator off anf brought it to them they could swap out the pulley.

Other than that the only thing to do is jam a screwdriver in there to keep the blade from spinning...not a good idea.

On most alternators, there's a hex-key socket on the shaft of the alternator. Use a hex socket and ratchet to hold the shaft from spinning while you loosen the pulley nut.

See the link below - I used one of your pictures showing where the hex socket is.

Right I got that part figured out...but you cant use the hex key while you have a socket on there, cause i cant get the hex key to go through hardened steel. The socket gets in the way. Maybe if I had a wrench that was big enough, but I dont...I just have a regular socket that will fit around the big nut.
I just cant get the hex key nut to spin...its still lefty loosy on an alternator pulley right?

Yeah, I see what you're saying... Do you have one of those wrench-sockets?

Yes, it's standard right-hand (tighten) thread : )

I got a cheap socket and ground flats on it then used a wrench[or even a pipe wrench with a piece of pipe/extenxion on that] that way you can get the hex wrench thru the socket drive hole.. it was a PITA but it did come off that way..

i havent done it on an alternator but on a tensioner pully i used a strap wrench to hold it while i loosened the bolt
