i get a lot of smoke through my shift boot that smells like burning oil. it only happens at high revs, so i'm guessing its the rear main seal. just wondering if i need to have the motor pulled? i'm having my tranny gone through this spring so if i could fix the rear seal with the tranny out that would be cool if not then i guess they'll both have to come out. thanks for your help!

 

you can replace the seal when the tranny is out.

Any auto parts store will have the seal, and it's probably around $15 or so. Before you change it though you may want to take a closer look and see where the oil is really coming from. I would suspect a valve-cover gasket before a rear main seal. Get under the car with a good flashlight and follow the oil slick to the source.
