how do you get to the rear main seal?
how do you get to the rear main seal?
i get a lot of smoke through my shift boot that smells like burning oil. it only happens at high revs, so i'm guessing its the rear main seal. just wondering if i need to have the motor pulled? i'm having my tranny gone through this spring so if i could fix the rear seal with the tranny out that would be cool
if not then i guess they'll both have to come out. thanks for your help!

Re: how do you get to the rear main seal?
Any auto parts store will have the seal, and it's probably around $15 or so. Before you change it though you may want to take a closer look and see where the oil is really coming from. I would suspect a valve-cover gasket before a rear main seal. Get under the car with a good flashlight and follow the oil slick to the source.
