How do you adjust timing?

From what I have seen on the dyno, there is very little hp to be gained from changing the calibration on a stock motor. Reprogramming may still be useful - to remove the speed limiter, change the rev limiter, adjust shift points, compensate for tire diameter, etc. But there is little hp to be gained. Maybe 5rwhp or so due to the stock calibration being a little bit on the rich side.
There may be considerable gain from turning off the knock sensor based retard. Many cars have false knock, especially if headers or noisier valve train components have been installed. The chance of enigne damage is there, but if you always use high octane fuel and use some sense about driving the car, there is unlikely to be a problem.
But in general, unless you are trying to fix a specific problem, a generic "tune" will be a waste.
