How do I make a 12 second car?
Hey, this is my first post, so "Hi" to everyone.
I just bought a 95 green Z-28 LT1 6-speed. I want this car to eventually run 12's or maybe even 11's. I wanted to know what you guys think is the best way to go about this. What parts to have installed in what order. I would think that exhaust and air intake would be the first two things to install. I just want to have a map of what to do so I don't install parts in the wrong order and start breaking things.
Thanks

Exhaust, LT headers, CAI, and a decent cam you should be in high 12s, throw on a pair of slicks and youll be there no doubt.
Exhaust - I heard GMMG Chambered and it sounds badass, I personally have loudmouth and love it. With loudmouth you either love it or hate it.
CAI - Any CAI about the same or make one yourself.
Headers- IMO get some Jet Hot Longtubes and if you have emissions you can get them with hookups.
CAM-If you have emissions the Hot Cam is pretty popular, if not the 306 is also pretty popular.
That should get you there. If not then get a nice set of stickies and youll be there for sure.

Yes, I have to worry about emissions. And my car came with a few mods already. It has a brand new Flowmaster cat back exhaust, K&N CAI, Hypertech 160* thermostat, MSD ignition, Hurst short throw shifter.

Get some hooker longtube headers, then talk to madwolf about tuning your car using tunercat, that should get you just into the 12's.

since you have to worry about emissions, and I think Jersey has a visual inspection, forget LT's (longtube headers). They are not legal at all as they relocate the cat(s). Do not buy sticky tires unless you want to be replacing the rear end soon, the rears on these cars can't handle the shock that a 6 speed (M6) can throw at it, even stock with stickies.
If your looking for 12's with little traction, go shorty headers (MAC's are good and decently priced), CAI (which you already have), catback (you already have, and don't let anyone tell you your Flowmaster is hurting you unless they can back it up with actual evidence), and throw a decent cam in it. For cams, you can purchase the LT1 HOTcam from GM for around $450 and it comes with roller rockers, springs, retainers, etc. You can try to go bigger on the cam, but it will take some good programming to let you pass emissions. Anytime you put a cam in you should get it tuned by a professional to get the most out of it. You can either do a mail order tuning which sometimes is a hit and miss proposition, or dyno tuning which is great but horridly expensive. (~$300+)
This should put you in the 12's without traction, and if you want to go faster than that start looking into head porters and what they can do for you.
Really if you want to start running 11's while worrying about emissions your going to need to get traction, and for that your going to need to upgrade your rear end to a 12 bolt or 9 inch ($2000+).

Basically keep reading the board and you will gain a sense as to how other people have done this.
Stay away from long tube headers if you have emission issues. It isn't a question of whether or not someone else has gotten away with it or not, its a question of how much hassle you want to put yourself through.
If you just want to run 12's there are plenty of ways to do it. If you want to runs 12's weekly or race frequently, you will want to take a different appropach that will include a driveshaft loop and 12 bolt rear end.
