How do I control shift point in 700R4?

I'm installing a 700R4 and I would like to know how shift points are adjusted. Are they done internally? I know they are done electronically on the 4L60E.

They are controllled via the T.V. cable adjustment. Make sure it's properly adjusted or you'll burn up the tranny. There is slight room for adjustment on them.

I thought the TV/dent cable controlled downshifts. How do I adjust them both without affecting the other? Is it possible to set them at 6200rpm without hurting my trans? Am I way off? Please clear this issue up for me.

I think it's going to affect both. When I had my 91 Z I was going to have a good tranny shop nearby install a shift kit. Good guys there, the owner told me I didn't really want that. So he adjusted my T.V. cable and then it shifted higher in the rpm band. A little firmer because it was at a higher rpm thus more line pressure coming through. I think also that the shift points are affected by the valve body : heavier vs lighter springs and drilling out a line in the valve body for higher pressure. That's basically what a shift kit is doing when you put one in. But there are better ways to do it than shift kits. Some of the internals other than right in the valve body can be modified for a stronger harder/faster shifting transmission with less slippage than what a shift kit can deliver but that all entails a total rebuild by a shop who knows what they're doing. For you, you can adjust the T.V. cable a bit. I'd check or post on the 3rd gen board since most of those folks are likely running that trans. It's been too long for me to remember what the limits are going to be before damage would occure.

I plan on buying a TPI built 700R4 with a 3000 stall and cooler. I don't mind the part throttle shift points much but I want a 6200rpm shift point. Maybe I should take it to a shop and have them adjusted when I do the swap. Is there any literature I might buy to shed some light on the subject?

The WOT shift points are controlled by the governor. It's on the driver side near the rear of the tranny. There are two sets of weight and springs. You need to experiment with different size weight's and spring settings till you get the shift point you want. Here's what you need.

Can you get to the governor to change the springs without dropping the tranny? Does anyone have pictures or a schematic of where the governor is located?
