How do i clear a obd error code without an expensive reader?

I got the service engine soon due to my gas tank being left open. It's happened before and I had a friend look at it. It said something about a catalyst error. He cleared it for me. Well another friend opened my gas tank and left it open and i drove it. The light came on again and i dont know how to get it off.

I heard that you can leave it in accessory mode and tap the gas 5 times or something and it will reset but does anyone else know a trick. I don't want to bug my friend again or pay a lot of money for a dealership to clear it.

If you don't care about finding out what the code is, you can easily reset the PCM by removing the PCM BATT fuse in the dashboard fuse panel for ~30 seconds.
