how do i change the valve covers?

Hey guys i just bought a set of proform valve covers and would like to start wrenching on my won stuff. I had the motor swap into my truck professionally done. Know the ins and outs of the motor and such and was there for the complete build but not completely sure on how to go about replacing things. I know the basic changing the plugs and wires and such But when i go to swap my valve covers out what are some thing i need to look out for/know. This maybe the stupidest question but do i need to drain the oil to swap out the vlave covers? I am almost positive i dont need to.

also the a/c i am wanting to take off the part that connects into the heater box. How do i go about doing this?

thanks in advance for ALL the help!!

The valve covers are easy. The passenger side requires removing the alternator, but that's pretty simple too. Just remove the 4 bolts, wipe off any gunk around the perimeter of the covers to prevent it from falling into the rocker valley, and pull them off. I'd recommend changing the gaskets too, unless yours came with the reusable gaskets. Install is reverse of removal. If you have traction control (big black box over driver side valve cover) there are 3 nuts that hold it on (2 on the intake and 1 on the exhaust manifold).

sweet man thats what i thought the process was. So no oil draining nessacary? Also no traction control since my s10 doesnt have it . I have had the alternator off more times than i care to count also so this should be a walk in the park!

Anyone have any input on the ac?

You dont have to drain the oil. Just make sure to get new valve cover gaskets. My guess the old ones will keep slipping off the new valve covers trying to put them on if you were planning to use the old ones.

You can always keep the gaskets secured to the valve cover with some dabs of rtv silicone. Its always worked for me in the past.

Is your alternator in the same location as it is on an F-body? If it is, and you did not buy LT1 specific valve covers, the passenger side valve cover will have a clearance issue with the alternator.

Good Luck with the install !!

got that covered already. Made a billet piece to raise the alt. up a few inches to clear the tall valve covers i have on there already. Ive been reading and it seems the proforms arent having that bad of clearance issues. Anyone put some light into this?

Not sure of the particular design, but if the body of the rocker is narrow enough, you shouldn't have any problems.
