Post 1.6 RR's with Stock Cam - worth it?

Hello and new to the forum,

Just purchased a realatively low mileage 95 A4 Z28, with Blown Head Gaskets. Since the heads are coming off, I have decided to mildly port and polish, slight bowl clean-up and gasket match. I am also installing a set of stock size stainless valves. The car will be an 1-2 day a week driver, used primarily for enjoyment on the numerous curvy roads in the area. More road car than drag car, with eye towards improved performance without sacrificing realiability or installing a hi-stall converter.

Do not realy want to change out the cam, but wanted opinions on 1.6 RR's with stock cam and mods below for a few more HP. I have the option of adding better (double) valve springs to the heads for a few bucks if needed.

Thanks for helping out the New Lt1 guy, looking forward to reporting results.

Nothing wrong with just doing the rockers if that is what you prefer, you will want to upgrade the valve springs though. Welcome to the site.

I did this exact same thing when my headgaskets went. The extra lift you ll get from the 1.6rr will work well with the extra airflow from porting the heads.
Clean up your intake while your at it. I will be shifting my car at 5900rpms or 6k. You should still make power past redline, get a pcm tune also.

What kind of gain could you expect from 1.6 RR's on a stock engine with headers and exhaust?

Looks like this is a good way to go, RWHP estimate? - Thanks for the advice

You'll probably see around 10hp at the wheels, maybe a little more.

Is it pretty straight forward to do rockers and springs?

I hope these are questions that BleeZard would be asking. Otherwise, I've kinda hijacked his thread. Oh, well. He's probably a UT fan anyway.

ya its not too bad. You need a spring compressor and than to adjust the rocker arms for the install. I think full exhaust (lt's) is worth about 30-35 hp. Than figure 8-12 from the rockers, 10-15 hp from light headwork. So anywhere around 300-320rwhp depending on a few factors.
Im shooting for 330rwhp, but i have every bolt on except a ewp and heads and intake work.

If you are changing the valves, why wouldn't you put in 2.00- 1.56? The cost should be the same. Along with some beehives,1.6's, impy .029 gaskets, headers and a tune 320 rwhp should be had, maybe more.

Its pretty straightforward, Shoebox does have a tutorial on his site that goes over a valve spring swap.http://shbox.com/ci/valve_spring_swap.html

I was thinking the same, just a little extra for some machine work.

That's basically my setup. Refreshed valvatrain: new 1.6RRs, LT4 springs, retainers, lifters, and pushrods. The rest are bolt-ons as you can see in my sig.

With dyno tuning, I was putting down 315rwhp.

So, yes, it's worth it even with a stock cam. But since you're in there...why not add a bigger cam. For me, I'm in CA, so need to pass smog.

Can all of that be done with the heads on the car? And do 1.6 RR's fit under the stock valve covers?

Yes it can, and yes they fit just fine under the stock valve covers.
