How do I change the three seals in the timing cover?

Do I remove the 10mm bolts and pull it off? I thought I read you don't have to remove the cover to change those seals. They seem pretty stiff to me.

You could pry them out with a screwdriver, then tap the new ones into place.

That is what I did. Then, I used a seal driver to put them back in. You know, you have to order the opti drive seal and the water pump drive seal from the dealer, right?

No, but that figures. Okay, how do I pull the waterpump one out with the shaft sticking out? Then the crank pulley, I have to remove the stub first right? Would it hurt if I just removed the cover, it'll probably disturb the oil pan gasket eh?

If you remove the cover, you will need to lower the front of the pan. All the seals are replaceable without removing the cover (although all are not easy to get out).

And autozone sells a timing cover set. Comes with timing cover seal, crank, opti, wp seal , wp gaskits and o-rings. Made by felpro and runs $12.

I have a GM wp drive seal and the Felpro and you cannot tell the difference at all. the GM just has a number stamped in the outer metal ring. I was really suprised when i looked at them both.

I ordered the timing cover set from napa. It did not come with the water pump nor the opti drive seal. They also could not find any listing for those seals.

Re: How do I change the three seals in the timing cover?

You can remove the seals by drilling a small hole in the metal part of the seal, insert a dry wall screw slightly into the drilled hole, grab the screw with some vice grips and pull it out.

I wouldnt remove the timing cover, you could rip the pan gasket.

Do a search on how to install the water pump drive seal, if its installed incorrectly it will leak badly.

Every Fel-pro timing cover gasket I have bought included all the seals needed, except for the water pump gaskets.

Same here. I have bought over 3 sets so far and each and everyone has all 3 seals. I actually have a stock pile of all those seals.

Re: How do I change the three seals in the timing cover?

Well, got the crank hub off, I think the heat is the most important thing. Then I took the timing cover off. I ripped the pan gasket at the corners a little, kinda hard not to. Is replacing that gasket real hard? What if I just silicone it? Also, how much is too much slack for the timing chain? If I push it between the two gears it seems to deflect about a half-inch. Kinda seems like alot to me. Car has 89K miles...
