How cool is TOO COOL?

I've got my fan's programmed to come on hella soon.. My car usually sit's around 175*F and NEVER goes past like 180* is that TOO COOL? I mean I would think the colder the better. Some people say that if you go too cold that the car can go into OPEN LOOP??? That doesn't make sense seeing as how the OPEN LOOP setting will only allow the car to go into OPEN LOOP when the car goes below 140* so that shouldn't be an issue...

You're in no danger of going into open loop. Those temps are plenty cool. IMO, I don't see the benefit of having the fans run all the time. Not enough heat can cause inefficient combustion. Couple that with the extra drag from the alt keeping up the juice to run the fans and perhaps you have negated any performance gains, especially if you have not altered timing to take advantage of the cooler temps.

Lower coolant temps remove heat from the combustion chamber. That reduces the overall thermal efficiency of the combustion process, and reduces power production. Lowering coolant temps only makes sense if you can gain more power with additional timing, and reduced inlet charge temperatures, than you lose due to thermal efficiency losses. After extensive engine dyno testing, we run my engine at 195degF. That gave the best balance of power and resistance to detonation. Not necessarily the answer for all setups, but an indication that there is an optimal temp, and cooler is not always better.

I used to set my fan at 171-181 at which, my car is always running at 175 as well. On the very hot days with street driving it will creep to below the 1/4 mark about 185 or so. Then I notice that when it is very hot, my car actually drives better and smoother. One time I drove to Sac Raceway and it must have been like 95F, my car was cruising really nicely up there and on the street, and it gave me 18mpg as well.

So now, I have been trying different settings currently at 180-190, but the car still drive around 175 if I am on the freeway or driving non-stop, even if it is hot. This due to my 160 thermostat not mentioning my Mez heavy duty WP and bigger air dam.

So I am also leaning toward too cold may not be better. Also, 160 thermo may be a little to cold; a 180 or 175 thermo will be better, at least for me.

After talking to numerous techs and trying different things and talking with GM performance numerous times, LT1 are designed to run at 180 to 210 for optimum performance. Just like some others say, when you adjust one, its more then likely gonna require another adjustment.

heh mine always runs about 190 when cruising 60+mph, and about 220 stop and go

i got a problem w/ opti egr or O2' tho so that could be causing it to run funny
