How to Check Oil for Gas?

I have been having a big problem with gas getting into my oil for the past 3 weeks or so. I checked and fixed all the possible problem areas, but the oil still smells like gas when I smell through the filler tube. But when I drain it out, it does not smell like gas. I have a feeling it might be old residue. Is there any way to check if oil has gas in it when it is sitting in a pan? (I don't have any fancy instruments so I need something that could be done in the garage please)

It does not smell like gas but that does not mean its not there. In the engine, the gas evaporates in the crancase and the fumes linger causing a strong smell through the filler tube. But outside the evaporated gases spread over a much larger area, therefore the oil might have gas in it but it will not smell. As for the match, through trial and error I found out that you have to have a crap load of gas in the oil for it to light.

Anybody else?

Re: How to Check Oil for Gas?

Might look around and see where there is a local place that does oil analysis, probably cost $10-15 but will be able to tell you exactly how much fuel is in there and might even be able to show you some other things as well.
I paid a service a little extra to have a detailed reading of the report done and even though no fuel was in the oil when I drained it the guy was still able to tell the oil was fuel diluted at some point. He was right too because I had left it idle to warm up on a number of occassions. This would also be able to tell you wether you are doing bearing damage with this problem.

Thanks for the help, what would I look for in the yellow book? They don't list oil analysis, under what category does it fall?

Smell the oil on the dipstick. Not the crankcase fumes. You don't need a lab for that.

Might take an oil change or two to get it really cleaned up. Good luck

See if your oil level is increasing....Also you may want to remove your fuel rail from the intake and prime your fuel pump to see if any injectors are leaking..I just had this problem....or remove all spark plugs and see which cylinder spits out fuel when you turn the car over..
