How can you tell if a clutch is going bad?

Well, my 95 has just rolled 61K today. My clutch doesn't engage until it is about 2-3" from the top of the free height of the pedal. I have had my car at the GM dealer twice...one of them told me the clutch was fried, the other said that it was fine. I didn't get to talk to either of the tech's about it so I don't know which dealer is correct. One of them said that it's fried cuz it doesnt engage til the pedal is all the way up. I didn't know if this was true or not.

I have a 95 TA with a T56. I was wondering if there was any way to test to see if I need a new clutch. I dont know how to tell if it's slipping or not. I'm not an expert with manual transmissions so could someone fill me in as to what it means when the clutch is 'slipping' and how to tell if I need a new one?

Apply E-Brake. Put in first gear. Let clutch out while applying some gas. If car stalls, the clutch is engaging. If the engine continues to run, the clutch is slipping. JMHO

On second thought, you should probably put it in a higher gear e.g.,4th. When letting out the clutch slowing increase your RPM to around 2k. Again, it should kill the engine. If not, don't let it run for more than a couple seconds or you'll make matters worse.

You might also consider blocking your wheels in addition to the E-Brake lest you have a lousy E-Brake.
