How to adjust A/F ratio and timing

Is there any way to adjust your air/fuel ratio and timing without a laptop, for example to get your car dyno tuned?

Not sure exactly what you mean. Ther are some add-on devices that can "fool" the computer, and you can do things like install an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, etc. But to really get control of fuel and spark, you need a program like LT1_Edit or Tunercat to allow you to reprogram the PCM. A shop may have a "professional" version allowing them to tune without you purchasing your own software, but at least a part of their cost to acquire the program will appear on your bill, one way or another.

It's best to have your own version of the software though. Allows you to make changes at any time. You don't really need a laptop. For some time I was lugging my desktop out to the garage. My wife thought I was nuts.

There are a couple hacks to do the AF and timing but I would just have it tuned. For what you spend on that stuff you could have purchased LT1 Edit

Part of the beauty of FI is being able to look at numbers! When you just change jets you really have no idea what your AF is unless you are on a dyno, and tuning that way takes longer than FI.

Bags of tricks like MAFT and such are just bandaids, and yeah you could have easily gotten Tunercat or even LT1 Edit for the prices of all these hack job solutions.

I'm trying to do some research now on tuning programs, and I'm leaning toward LT1 Edit. The official LT1 Edit site seems to be down, though. How hard is it to get into computer tuning if you've never done it before?

I have a ? please. I have LT1 Edit, did not do it myself. When disconnecting the battery to fool with for example an LT4 KM or new Maf install, does the computer go back(resets itself) to stock settings, or does it "remember" the LT1 Edit changes. I had the battery disconnected early last Dec to install stuff and haven't driven since. Just wondering if the money I paid to have the computer LT1 Edited just went to waste?
Thanks.

Removing power from the pcm does not erase the programming.

That is correct. It will reset your learned parameters though which may make the car run slightly different for a little while.
