How to adjust 1.6 rr when the car is running...

Is there any other way besides "clacking method". I tried to do it that way, but I am not sure when rocker starts clacking (any was to recognize it?)...
Thanks

I have never heard of adjusting them while running. Sounds unsafe.

Here is how I've always done it.
Loosen all the cover bolts but leave valvaecovers on so oil doesnt spray all over
Startup and run till operating temperature bring RPM to 1500 at least for a few seconds to get oil floing to valvetrain. (at Idle not much reaches the valvetrain. Thats why vehicles that Idle alot like police cars have valvetrain probs. )

Turn key off, remove valvecovers get somone else to turn crank if possible....
Turn crank till intake valve begins opening. Obiously if the intake is opening the exhaust is closed.... start with #1 exhaust valve
Tighten till you can no longer spin pushrod by hand then turn 180 degrees.
Turn crank till exhaust begins to close... if exhaust is closing intake mumust be on base circle. Adjust intake in same manner. Re-peat for all cylanders....

I did it with the engine running in auto. Take one valve cover off and start to loosten the stud up untill it starts to rattle, then its 1 1/2 turns tighter from when it stops clanking.

The 1 1/2 turns thing i think is right, check that # before you do it.

You do have to have some pre load on the lifters first so they all dont clank at the same time, is that the problem?

When you have more than 0 lash the rocker will start "clacking" you will know it when you hear it. Slowly tighten the adjustment nut until the clacking stops. Then set your pre-load. Some set it anywhere from 1/4 - 1 full turn down from 0 lash. May want to fabricate some kind of shield to keep oil off the headers as much as possible. I just use a piece of cardboard.

Hardly any oil spurts out, don't be afraid. Easy to clean anyways.

Make sure all the rockers are tight, and not clacking. Then loosen one until it clacks, then tighten it 1/4-1/2 turn. Then lock it down, and move on to the next.

If you don't know what the clacking sounds like... too tight, and the engine will start to bog. Too loose, and you will hear the clacking. So try loosening a rocker until you hear clacking, or tightening them all until things quiet down... if the engine rpms dip down, then it's way too tight.
