Hotcam or wait.

I have been toying with the idea to do a Hotcam for about the past year. I am the type of person who thinks things over a hundred times before actually doing them. I want to put in the hotcam because I really want to have the lope at idle and the extra power. It is a decent kit and is very cheap. I do plan on doing a total rebuild and possible a LE2 kit in the future, but as far as right now I don't have the money and am going to be in Pharmacy school within the next year or so. I was just going to do the Hotcam but my dad says I might as well just take the whole motor out and freshen it up. If thats the case then I might as well do heads and cam and bore it .030 over. I figured I could do the Hotcam swap without pulling the heads or pulling the motor. If I would wait to do the whole motor rebuiled it would be at least two or three years if not longer before I would do it so I would get my money out of the Hotcam kit.

So here's my problem, should I go ahead and do the Hotcam kit this summer and just do that. Or should I just wait and do the whole rebuild with heads, cam and all in a few years.

If you have the intent of doing a full rebuild shortly down the road, I would just hold off and keep the funds saved towards that.

What he said. When you pull the motor, you start getting into the "while I am here" way of thinking. That is not bad but it can be costly. For me, that thinking took me from a $500 timing chain and valve job to a $5000 complete rebuild.

Well the more and more I think about it the rebuild will most likely not be until after I get out of Pharmacy school (about 5 years down the road). So if I did just do the cam with the motor still in the car it might not be as bad.
