HotCam Timing Chain question

I am planning on purchasing the hotcam kit for my bird. Im going to go with the GM timing set. Would I need an 'Extreme Duty Timing Set' or would I be alright with the regular LT4 set?

edit: Also, if I went with the Extreme Duty one, would it be preferable to also purchase the oversize Crank Sproket?

Re: HotCam Timing Chain question

I'd get the extreme duty. I'm running the oversized sprocket and it really took all the slack out of the chain.

Re: HotCam Timing Chain question

The LT1 sprocket is undersize as compared to a SBC,as the General spected it that way to take some of the load off of the front cam bearing. It has enough load driving the water pump.
If ya are going to run an electric WP the "oversize"(same size as a standard SBC) will work,if ya are running the stock water pump I would go with the "standard" LT1.
The GM chain is made by Cloyes to the Generals spect.

Re: HotCam Timing Chain question

When I put my CC305 in I installed a new factory LT1 chain, I don't race the car that much and the cam isn't super huge so I didn't see a need for anything stronger.

Re: HotCam Timing Chain question

Over 100k on my motor now with the hotcam kit in it, and the stock lt1 timing set. Its still going strong, and it gets revved over 6k frequently. Of course when I installed the hotcam kit in this motor back in 1999, it was a brand new LT1 long block on the stand from GM, on a so everything was brand new.

I've heard you say that before and it could very well be true, but i just thought i'd note that when i swapped cams at 35k on my motor my front bearing was in like new condition. Now that the chain has streched a little it fits perfect. With the stock ED LT4 setup i think there would of been a lot of stretch in it now. I know you know more than me on this subject, i'm just stating my findings.

Re: HotCam Timing Chain question

If it helps any, I decided to run an electric pump and get the cloyes true double roller chain. Was about the same cost as running the LT4 heavy duty chain.

Re: HotCam Timing Chain question

I allready had an EWP, so the choice to run a cloyes double roller was pretty straightforward.

I dont advise what I do but I'm running the stock chain and gears on a 130k engine with the hotcam and spraying a 150 shot, runs like a beast. a double roller is over kill for a hot cam...

I dunno...not that I advise running the same combo I do, but I have been spraying a 125 wet shot on mine since 35K, and its still ticking...

Re: HotCam Timing Chain question

well what i should have said was 'sprayed' on my setup because i sold my nitrous. I would advise at the least getting a Cloyes OE chain to put back on.
