Hotcam on Stock Converter related questions.

Pretty soon I want to get a cam for my car, and I'm thinking about getting the Hotcam kit because it comes with eveything I need, minus an upgraded timing set and tune. I need to keep my stock converter for now since 3 weeks before I put the car away for storage, it came out of the transmission shop because I toasted it from having a 2800 stall.

So rules are since dad had it rebuilt for me, I can't modify it. I want to run the LT4 Hotcam Kit on the stock converter and need to hear from people that have an idea of what this is going to be like for me.

Btw- I did do a search I just want more opinions.

You'll be fine, I ran an XE 224/230 for well over a year with the stock stall and an 850 idle. Never had a single mechanical problem.

I would put on a trans cooler if you don't have one already though.

I think you'll be fine. Even with ported heads my HOTcam still gave good enough low end where I could lug the car up hills in overdrive with the converter locked.

I second the trans cooler recommendation if you don't have one.

Re: Hotcam on Stock Converter related questions.

it will be fine. THe car down low won't have nearly the power it had before.

I had a vigilante 2800 with 3.23 gears and I also had a stock conv with 4.10's.

My car ran much better with the stock convertor and 4.10's. I know some people will dispute this but I'm not sold on the convertors. With the vigilante I had to run much better tires than I did without it to hook.

I ran 13.0 at 109 with just the hot cam, edelbrock shorties on nittos and the 4.10's, I never got that much mph with the vigilante again and the drag radials were useless

Re: Hotcam on Stock Converter related questions.

The Hotcam loses nothing on the bottom end compared to the stock LT1/LT4 cam. It just gains a bit above 4000rpm all the way to its peak at 6400rpm.

It's a very easy cam to work with. Hardly any more trouble than stock.

I ran a 306 cam with the stock stall converter for about a year. had to use both feet on the brake pedal to stay still at a stop sign sometimes, but still drove pretty well.

Nice, I was wondering if anyone ran a 306 on the stock tranny. It was that bad huh? How did it drive from stops and racing? Everyone says you need 2800 or higher for that cam, but it sparks my interest and was wondering how long I could get away with the stock converter. I think if someone can make it on the stocker with a 306, the Hotcam will be fine, run the hotcam kit or save a bit more and wait for a combination motorsports cam kit GP and buy a 224/230 for a bit more cam.

Re: Hotcam on Stock Converter related questions.

in my opinion it wasn't to bad. and the car was programed to idle at about 1000 rpm. prolly higher than the hotcam. Braking at speed is unchanged its just keeping it stoped. and as far as off the line performance goes it was sort of sluggish. It wouldn't flat tear em off if I just mashed it from a stop. But once it got up to about 3000rpm or so. THEN it got fun

Thats not the same result I found with mine. Before the 4.10's below 3000rpms it didn't take off nearly as well as it did with 4.10's. I think 4.10's were made for that cam but thats me

about 5 years ago when all these other cams were not being used yet it was very impressive
