Hot cam problems

Anyone had problems with valve train setup when running the GM Hotcam kit? Checked installed valve height would like to know what someone else came up with. My car is a 94 .

I had the Hotcam kit on my car many moons ago, no problems

Did you use the whole GM kit or just the cam?

I used the kit .My problem is the valve train is noisy like a solid cam would be. I have ran the valve twice and its still the same . And I have checked its oiling ok.

How did you adjust the rockers? Are they Non-selfadjusting or Self Adjusting?

I ran the hotcam kit back in 1999...but I remember noticing alot of noise from the valvetrain as well. I made sure everything was set properly, and contined to run it for over 100k miles before I rebuilt the motor for my current set-up. I think that those self-aligning rocker arms are just plain noisy in comparison to the stockers. If you're sure every thing is set properly, I wouldn't worry about it.

Do you mean selfaligning? They are selfaligning. And will the noise cause the knocksensor to react. And I use the getting #1 up then # 6 up method.

Personally, I prefer the EOIC (method 3). shbox.com

Self-Aligning tend to be a bit noisier than NSAs. Doubt that a noisey rocker would affect knock sensor. Usual adjustment is between 3/8-1/2 turn, but if a bit more quiets them down, go for it. I believe they are about 1 full turn stock. At any rate, I'd readjust them just to elimate the possiblilty that you got it wrong the first time. JMHO

I can see the benefit of using that method so I will give it a try.

This is the same method that I've used for years. I don't like the other methods because they rely on where the cam lobe is "suppose" to be, not where it actually is. The EOIC method eliminates the guessing.

Ran the valves again last night even tried tighting the jam nut a little more but the noise is still there.I don't think I can deal with the noise so I might have to change cams again.

How much run time to you have on the motor since the cam swap? Are you sure that all your lifters have had time to pump up with oil? I swapped this same cam into a friends 94 Z28 back in 2005 and I remember it made alot of lifter noise when we first started it back up for about 10 min....and then it suddenly got quiet (well, as quiet as it was gonna be anyways) when all the lifters pumped up.

If you're sure that all the lifters have had time to pump up, then I'll tell you that the cam is not what causes the noise. It's the SA rocker arms that are noisy. Honestly, it's noticable when everything is set properly, but certainly not excessive enough to justifly changing the cam or rocker arms.

If it truely is that bad to you, try putting your stock rocker arms back on. If the noise persists, then something is not right somewhere. But if it quiets down to your liking then just run it that way. You'll lose a little lift and therefore possibly a few hp though. Any aftermarket rocker arm is going to be lounder than stock though, just keep that in mind.

You would have to better describe what you are hearing IMHO to understand what is going on. They sell an LT4 knock module because the LT4 came with those roller rockers and yes they are noisy! They should sound like a sewing maching, if it is clacking then you have an issue with the way they are lashed or problems elsewhere. Rollers are noisy compared to a non mechanical stamped rocker, even the NSA ones can be heard. Using a composite valve cover reduces the noise.

exactly. you may not be used to the noise a performance/aftermarket valvetrain makes.

I have a 383 in my 71 camaro with a roller cam and roller rockers they make no noise that i can hear. My lt1 however sounds like my dads 67 Z28 with solid lifters. It has about 125 miles on it now after the cam swap.I pulled the rollers back off and looked at them again I don't see any problems with them so I will just try to run it a little more and see what happens.
