Hot Cam for my stock '94

I am interested in the GM Hotcam kit. The car this would be for is my 1994 Camaro Z28 which is my daily driver. I just want a little more bite out of her. The car has low miles, and everything is stock except for the bolt-on CAI and catback. The transmission is an A4 and im getting a tru-cool transmission cooler for that aswel.
I have a couple questions about this kit:

4L60E - How will the transmission react to this mod? Reliability is very important to me. If i cant go faster and remain reliable then im just not willing to do so.

Gas mileage - How much will this hurt my fuel economy? Will i still be able to pass emissions also?

Lob - How bad is it? I have the Hooker super comp catback kit with 2.5" pipes it has a pretty tame exhaust note. Still sounds nice though.

Rear Ratio - I did a search and a majority of the board members hate the 2.73 ratio. I dont care for it either only because it helps me on mileage. To be honest, i really dont know by how much though. The only way ill want to upgrade is because i HAVE TO or 2.73 isnt really helping me. If i where to upgrade id probably go for 3.23 or 3.42 at the most.

Thanks guys

The Hotcam is a good choice for a reliable daily driver. It shouldn't push you over the top in terms of power where you should have to worry about blowing your tranny. Gas mileage shouldn't suffer too much and some of that will depend on how you drive it. I have heard of some people having issues passing emissions with the Hotcam so I would say make sure you have a good PCM tune done. As for the lope, the Hotcam does have a nice little lope to it, nothing overbearing IMO.

Well im glad to hear its a good DD cam. I had already planned to send my PCM over to PCM for less. So a good tune should keep me emissions legal? I would really hate to see it fail my strict emissions. I was kinda hoping for a little more responses than i got. This is a pretty popular cam. I just was not able to pull everything i wanted to know about it. Thanks to those who have responded.

hotcam+stock tranny = your gonna need a bigger stall

bigger stall+stock tranny= smoked tranny

I love my hotcam but it was slightly annoying with stock converter...it would kinda lunge at stoplights and try to pull through the brakes.

your really gonna want a stall to go with the car...

If I were you, I would skip the cam and get a "built tranny" with a 3000 stall. Not only will you get a reliable component for you car...but you will also loose about a half second on your track time bc of the stall.

Basically if you want faster time slip get a stall with a built tranny...then add hp...or just get the cam and forget the stall and deal with it...or get cam and stall and pray...or be like me get cam and stall and pay for installation then burn tranny up within 6 months and have to buy a "built tranny"

good luck

If you look in the computer and diagnostics thread maybe you could chime in on the question i posted.. Its really something i need to figure out here.. Basically my 94 isnt intended to drag. Im getting into Auto X and road racing and i wanna be able to do well and keep my DD Thanks

You will want to change the gears from 2.73 to 3.73. The Hotcam will take away some lowend power and it will feel sluggish in normal driving especially overdrive. I changed from 3.23 to 3.73 and it made a big difference. It feels great now.

Im in the process of swapping rearends....Sorry to hijack thread....I cant make up my mind...staying with the 3.23's or swapping to 3.73's.

I drag race...and Im afraid that if I switch I want have any traction...my car sends them up in smoke as is...I dont want to add to the problem...and I've heard from a role that 3.73's are slower than say 3.42's or 3.23's....

thanks,

pride

I can tell you my car is definitely faster with the 3.73s than the 3.23. Do the swap. You won't regret it. It sounds like you need some stickier tires to go along with that stall.

By faster, do you mean lower E.T.'s? Just about any time you change to a numerically higher gear it is going to "seem" faster. Gains from gears are highly dependent on your overall setup. It has to be able to make use of the RPM band change.

I haven't taken it to the track yet so you have a point there. You are right, you will see different results depending on the setup. I am still on the stock stall convertor so that probably plays a big part in it.
