Is the hot cam kit the best bang for the buck?

I am looking to get some more power out of my car, It seems the most bang for buck would be the hot cam kit? I have $1,000 to spend to make the car faster. What would you buy?

The Hot cam is a great choice. Beware... It is a choppy cam though.

I would pass on the hotcam. If you got $1k to play around with, you can do a lot better than that. You will definitely wish you went bigger. I think it's like 218/224. My cam specs are in my sig and now I'm wishing I went with something a little bigger.

Get a custom grind, or CC503, you could get similar idle to a hot cam, similar driveability, and overall more power. The springs with the LT4 hot cam kit are junk. I wouldnt use them with a hot cam. So youll be replacing those anyways. Get decent springs, quality rockerarms and pushrods, etc. Do it once, and do it right. You dont want to skimp on ANYTHING that goes inside the engine. And likewise, I'd say you shouldnt be thinking of putting a cam until your ready to spend the money to get a degreeing kit, and do everyone one time, and do it right.

All it takes is a broke valve spring, or pushrod, to grenade that beast. Dont cut corners inside the motor.

Dude, by looking at your sig; I would say forget a cam right now... Your e.t. is horrible for that mph. you should be super deep in the 13s if not a high 12! Get some stickys and see what that combo will do as is .**** if you add more power you will just spin more... that is all, carry on.

I like the Hotcam Kit...I think it is the best bang for the buck as a kit. I have ran it for the past 2 years with over 100,000 miles on the car with no problem only spinning it up to 6400 MAX. I agree with the above post though. Maybe you need to look into some suspension upgrades, drag radials and get the power you have to the ground before adding more power.

I have a set of M/T 26x10x15 ET slicks for the car That I havn't even bolted on yet. My 60' is 2.4 wich the slicks should take care of. I just want to get some more power out of her, I know she will hook on the slicks. Im looking for an 11 second pass. You guys seem pretty set on the cc503, what rockers and springs should I get? And will that cam perform with my 273 gears?

not to mention 2.73s out back

i would start with some 3.73s and then a cam, springs and rockers, just not a hot cam kit

Yes the hot cam is the best bang for the buck. I ran the hot cam kit (rockers, springs etc.) for 2 solid years of flagrant abuse on a stock short block. I never had 1 issue with that combo. The only supporting mod I had was a set of long tubes and a tune, everything else was stock. The entire package (cam, headers, ecu, gaskets) was about $1,300 total. It picked up 70 RWHP, added 7 MPH to the trap, increased the power band by 1,000 rpm, and drove about like stock.

I am currently running the hot cam kit with Crane Cam 1.6 Gold rockers, and harden pushrods. I have had it in for about 3 months now and love it. The car deffently has more power, I havent had it on the dyno yet, but I did go to the track one night when it was 100 degrees outside and I had a plug wire that was cut and arching off the water pump and I still picked up 4 MPH in the 1/4. I say go for it or the CC503, like everyone else has said. You really need to get some gears first those 2.73 are killing you. I was running 13.4x before the cam with my mods on stock 3.23s

I agree, look at my mods and the times I ran. You have more out of your setup than what your currently running. Mine was on street tires and stock stall. You should try to get more out of your setup now so you know how to use a more powerful one.

Read the rest of his sig, he also is at 6000 ft. Defiantly get some gears for it though before anything. A cam with 2.73's is just not a good idea.

2.73's in general, are just not a good idea. Inless you want super highway mileage I guess ???

I second this. Spend your money on some gears before an cam!

ok so 342's or 373's with the nitrous? I guess I'll do gears and then a cam, I'm seriously thinking about an le1 setup. How much more power will the le1 setup put down over the hot cam kit?

I bought a CC503, Pac 1518 springs, and all the other crap that goes with a valvetrain rebuild and spent about $1K. From what I've read, that set up is better than the Hot Cam kit. Do a search and read up on the cams. Hopefully the damn thing will be ready before the F******N snow flies so I can drive the god damn thing and see what the piece of crap car can do after the God Damn thing is rebuilt. I'll be sure to post results of all the work and F*****N money I've sunk into the POS Z-28 I now own. (forgive me for my anger....the car has spent more time sitting in my drive way with a spun main bearing than it's been driven)
