Hot cam gas mileage?

Ok, I'm not complaining about it by any means. I know a V8 with an aftermarket cam is going to get worse gas mileage. I was just wondering if this seems out of the ordinary.

I just took my car out of storage (everything done to it is in the signature) and Ive driven it to work the past two days (11.5 mile drive one way) Both days so far I have gone through a 1/4 tank of gas each day, the majority of it in the morning. Granted I am sitting in a lot of traffic where it is literally stop and go with little room to accelerate in the mornings.

I am wondering if that seems out of the ordinary, I mean, the hot cam is not all that aggressive where it should be eating up that much fuel should it? Any suggestions? The car does run quite rich probably because of the tune from pcmforless.com? Should I be concerned, or am I thinking about this too much?

BTW, I have a new fuel pump, less than a year old, and 67,xxx on the odometer.

Drive the car enough to use up a FULL(topped off) tank of gas and then calculate actual mileage. Trying to use the gauge as any sort of measuring device is futile. FWIW, I average 10-12 MPG in town and ~25 MPG on the interstate @ 75 MPH.

What's up dude!?

Haven't talked to you in a long time, hope everything is going well.

Anyways, in regards to your specific questions, I suffered similar issues (still kinda do) when I installed the Hot Cam Kit. It does generally tend to kill of a few MPG. I agree that it could be your tune much as you think. I was never all that satisfied with my Pcmforless experiences. If its in your a budget, you can't beat a full comprehensive dyno tune. Make sure its a tuner that tunes your normal fuel curve as well as WOT tables.

I don't think its anything out of the ordinary however, although I'm sure with gas prices the way they are its not good for your budget

Re: Hot cam gas mileage?

Oh no doubt, ok, just thought maybe the car was running really bad or something. Yeah, i do plan on getting a full session on a dyno eventually, but im going to do the gears first. I have 2.73 gears now and want to do 3.73 eventually.

That is another reason why i thought there might be a problem (just cuz the 2.73s are pretty good on gas mileage). Maybe i will see if pcmforless can back the tune off a bit and tone it down. Ill probably have to send it back to him because i dont think i am going to pass emissions. LOL

383, 2000 stall (auto) 3.23 rear gear, decent lead foot, i could do with 50/50 freeway, stop and go. I got roughly 14 per gallon, more freeway, keep it 65, and on cruise and I would do 17's

I did a 70% interstate, 30% city trip in my Camaro when I had HOTcam, ported heads and bolt ons- 22 mpg.

Re: Hot cam gas mileage?

yeah, my mileage is a ton better if i do interstate driving. I think the total stop and go with little relief is what does it.

Guess that answers this question... thanks guys.

I do not know about city because I have been having a lot of fun with it lately but I did check my highway mpg last week and got 25 mpg with the mods in my sig, which seems right on part with what others are getting.
