Hooker Y-Pipe Thoughts
Hooker Y-Pipe Thoughts
I know that a lot of people are interested in the Hooker Y-Pipe that is for use with Longtubes. I ordered this Y-Pipe along with my Jet Hot longtubes and I just wanted to share my thoughts on the hooker pipe. First off, it is a nice looking y-pipe out of the box. The quality looks good and everything like that. Now to the fit of the pipe. I installed my Jet Hots and I really never intended to install the y-pipe myself. I was just going to take it to my exhaust guy and let him install it and hook up the rest of the exhaust. I had a little time on my hands so I decided to see how close the y-pipe would come to just bolting up. Needless to say there was NO way I could get the drivers side to bolt up. My headers look to be closer than normal to the floorpan, but still this pipe had NO chance of fitting even after grinding the crossmember lip. My exhaust shop had to cut the y-pipe and change the entire angle of it on the drivers side to make it work. After all of the work he did to it, it looks, works and sounds awesome. I know that others have installed this pipe themselves, but I just wanted to give a heads up to anyone who is considering buying it that mine did not come close to fitting even after grinding the crossmember lip. So anyone that is considering buying this pipe understand that it may not bolt up correctly on everyone's car.

Does Jet-Hot make their own Y-pipe?

I have seen that several people have had issues with the Hooker y-pipe not meeting up with their Jet Hot longtubes properly. And so far it seems to be that it's because all of the Jet Hot brand longtubes are tucked up tighter to the floor pan.
I seem to remember from the first Jet Hot LT GP that their own headers do tuck up a little tighter for better ground clearance. If this is true, then that explains your issues. If you had Hooker headers that were Jet Hot coated, you might not have had the issues.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that you purchased a bad or the wrong set of headers, just that MAYBE the y-pipe isn't designed to work with the brand of headers you purchased.

Josh,
sorry to hear about your problems with the y-pipe.
I have installed brand new, polyurethane motor mounts with my hooker lt/cam install and on the driver side, the flange was almost touching the floorboard. I simply could not see how the y-pipe would ever fit on there.
I grinded the lip on the crossmember and took it to the shop. It was a pain, took over 2 hours to install, but it came out great and no modifications were done to the y-pipe itself. It's obviously touching the crossmember and I thought I will have some teeth chattering rattles, but it's actually not bad at all.
Here's a picture of mine installed.
The car is sitting at an angle, so the ground clearance isn't very accurate on this picture, but it will give you an idea of how it's installed.

Ion,
Glad you got your y-pipe bolted up. After seeing how far mine was from bolting up even after grinding the crossmember I took mine the the exhaust shop like I had planned to anyway. For $50 he cut the pipe and changed the angle, hooked up the ypipe and connected it up to my exhaust system. I was more than happy to pay $50 rather than put up with the hassle it would have given me.
As for the fit of my pipe, I am not sure what caused it to be off like it was. I am running the Jet Hot version of the Hooker headers and they are pretty close to the floor pan. I don't mind that though since I haven't had any problems at all with bottoming out yet, and I live on a crappy dirt road. All in all I am happy with the sound of the headers and pipe and I think it will be even better when I get a Hooker cat back to go with it.

By hooker Y-pipe from jet hot (comes bend on the driver side for trans brace) bolted up 100% without modding anything. What we had to do was, put a pray bar between the header and body and bend, this torqued the motor alittle and gave us room to get the boots in. Needless to say the y -pipe is HARD agianst the trans brace and it isn't going anywhere :P
