Re: Hood vents

I don't think it would make much difference, you can take them out but then crap can get into your enginbe bay which is not good. You probably need some kind of filter to cover up the holes just to be safe. Some company called billet malory or something like that that sells engine dress up sells filters for there. If anyone knows what that site is really called?

Re: Hood vents

go ahead right now and pull them off....they'll come right off with very little effort. You have to actually drill holes through the small sections of your hood to make them REAL vents. And even once you do that, I don't think this will provide a single bit of cooling....but yes, MBA does offer these billet pieces

Re: Hood vents

this is comming from the guy who helped with the design of the car...Red Planet..

He said to me they were supposed to be functional but water issies got in the way..so they just made for cool decorations. He said it would not be a good thing to do either since it created something to do with the radiator and not enough cooling since there is a cowl effect going on threre and alot of air is getting into the top of the engine area and pushing air into the back of the radiator so no cool air goes through and cools the car...if you follow what I mean. also he said alot of electrical components are in that area..rain is not a good friend..now if you could find a way to make the air come out without making the vents suck air or water then you got some cooling ducts...maybee a thick sponge material in the place of the plastic vents..???

Just what the man said to me..I wanted to do this for a long time too...but got the lowdown

i can personally vouch for this
there was a thread in the 5th gen forum iirc that capz brought up and he got all this info from
more info may lie in that thread if you want to dig it up
but yea, no sense in doing it with the risks that it poses
nice idea though

Re: Hood vents

I 'm sure you can buy another hood insert and make that pair vented with the mba screens and use it during the summer. And during the winter, put the original hood insert back in. I was actually thinking that when I first got my car but didnt really stab at the idea since I eventually had my fans set. I dont think it would do much but hey..any idea is cool with me.

Re: Hood vents

Most of the stock fake scoops leak water onto the engine as they are from the factory.. they really don't seal well at all..

Re: Hood vents

I tried this several years ago. Water dripped onto my plug wires and I misfired for 2 days until it completely dried up.

And no, the car didn't run one bit cooler.

Re: Hood vents

What about for a 3.8 V6? Same issue? I got a 97 with the same LT1 style frontend. I got a wild idea if anyone can follow. What about a U or J curved vent that redirects air from the radiator to the vent? Lemme see if I can make a photo... Ah here we go... http://www.geocities.com/rocksty.geo/Scoop.gif
You may have to copy and paste that into your URL bar for it to work.

Theory is, Air goes through the radiator and gets warm, warm air enters the green scoop under the hood and is thrusted OUT of the engine area via the J or U curved scoop. It is kinda like a reversed cowl I think. Check that out and tell me if you think such a scoop idea would work...

dont think it would work. the vents would be having problems trying to get the hot air out, with the wind blowing on the top of a car and hood. more likely forcing the hot air back into the hood area...good idea but not something that would work.
