Angry Hood supports took a crap

I got my car from out of storage a few days ago, I was so happy to see it... until I almost dropped the hood on my head Looks like I'm going to get some new hood supports. What would cause them to go bad when they were just sitting in a garage?

It takes both to hold the hood or hatch up, so one could be bad and the other not. When they are closed, they are under the most compression, so if there is a leak, that is when it would be most likely. Of course, they spend 99% of their life closed.
