Hood Sound Mat

97 Camaro.. Is it ok to take off the mat on the underside of the hood? I noticed that the 97 SS doesn't have this mat, and neither do the newer f-bodies. Is this just for sound, or will the heat cause my paint to crack or something?

Taking the mat off my Z28 didn't do anything besides make the engine bay look 10x better.

Isn't that thing just designed to heat up and drop down on your engine if it catches on fire ? I always took mine of and it looked alot better.

I'm pretty sure that's it's main purpose, that and for sound insulation. I removed mine about 4 years ago, it was looking ratty, never had any problems after removing it and it looks much better without it.

You'll be fine to take it off. It is for the fire purpose like stated above.
