Home made 3" exhaust.

So I was shopping around and really liked the hooker catback, but unfortunantly I live in Alaska and they want 120 for shipping plus the exhaust cost. So total cost $410.

I called around and everyone here wanted anywhere between $300-$400 to do the 3" exhaust from the headers back. What do I do... Build one of course!

I bought some 3" piping from Carquest, some hangers, some clamps, 2 90 degree angles and a custom bent 70 degree angle to go over the axle, and a 3" inlet/outlet hooker muffler.

Hooker Muffler $59.99
10' stick of 3" $31.00
2 90 degree bends $24.00 each
Custom bent 70 degree angle $12
2 Hangers = $6 each
2 Exhaust clamps = $5 each

Total Cost = $172.00

It took a welder, and a metal chop saw that can cut anywhere from 0-45 degree angles.

I used the chop saw and made 15 degree bends to give me an offset to get away from the driveshaft and more towards the passenger side so it would go staight over the axle without any problems. I then used a custom bent 70 degree angle and a 90 degree angle to go over the axle. I then used the last 90 degree to enter the 3" inlet on the hooker muffler and then used the last bit of pipe to create a 15 degree bend so it would angle out the drivers side rear bumper.

It came out better than expected. I wouldnt call it show quality work, but defiantly muffler shop worthy. What did I spend the extra cash that I saved on doing it myself you ask?

1. Lakewood Safety Loop $49.99
2. 2 BFG Drag Radial 2's $300

I think I came out way ahead if you ask me. It took a full days worth of work but was well worth the outcome.

I will try and get some pictures up tomorrow and a sound clip.

I think some of the best things I invested in is my wire welder and my air compressor.

Ugh, so I started the car up with the exhaust done. It rattles a lot. I didnt take into account when I dropped the car from the stands it would be such a tight fit. I think it is rattling because the over the axle part is actually hitting the axle. The sound sounds like it is coming from up front though. Really weird. Would header tape work enough to make the rattling go away?

Re: Home made 3" exhaust.

I had mine done at a shop and it looked like I had plenty of clearence everywhere, like at least 1/2"....well on bumps even though everything is solid its been hitting something..found one spot was hitting the tunnel brace...fixed that and now its hitting somewhere on the rear....maybe hitting the gas tank on bumps, hard to tell....
So I painted all of the close surfaces and have been driving around all week making it bang around...I'll look under there tomorrow and see where the paint is getting beat off. Used hi-temp paint of course...

Re: Home made 3" exhaust.

I would see if by adjusting the pipe at the slip joints would alow more clearance.

Smart idea. I think I am going to use a jack and jack the exhaust up about an inch and see if the rattle goes away.

It's going to look pretty funny driving around with a jack under your car. Hopefully it's at least a floor jack with wheels.

Re: Home made 3" exhaust.

Cool. I was able to take the jack and jack the exhaust up and weld some brackets to the exhaust and after taking the car back down to the ground there are no more rattles! I am a happy person.

I also installed my lakewood safety loop without removing the driveshaft.

Today was a great day.

He's in Alaska though. It doesn't matter how much ground clearance he has, the moose is still going to **** his car up.

Re: Home made 3" exhaust.

Angelis83LT: I was in a rush to get the car done. My buddy asked the same question. I was just anxious to drive it. I am open to suggestions on where to put it out the back. You are thinking just one single pipe straight out the back to the left?

robvas: The ground clearance isnt any lower than the differential. I measured with a tape and its actually about an 1" higher. The lowest spot is the actual outlet pipe from the hooker muffler. The press bend isnt WAY smaller. It is 2.75 inches. The shop explained that they have to use 13gauge steel to bend anything over 45 degrees thats 3" or larger or it will wrinkle.

For 175 bucks I cant complain. Most pay 300+ for the same exhaust results.
