Holy exploding lifters

So what potential damage am I looking at? Rest of the lifter was not in the hole, so Im hoping its in the pan

Cam lobe feels smooth, but I know I need to pull it. Prob need to pull the head and check the valve too.

What else?

I don't see how the cam could have survived without serious damage. Bits and pieces could be anywhere. I would have to go through the whole engine to be sure.

Cam is most likely trashed... mine was hopped on the cam lobe a few times after bending a pushrod and trashed the cam.

I guess you can pray, then. That's a pretty nasty thing to happen.

Nothing was said about having to replace the engine. Just going through it to get any pieces out so you don't have to spend the time/money on another engine.

If it makes it more fun, think of it as searching for diamonds in your engine. Any little piece you find could be worth thousands of dollars!

I'm more worried about any shavings rather than large pieces. (those are easy to get out)

I've been chasing something for quite a while, thought it might be valve float. I think a year of abuse did it.

The lifter was below the guide and has spun some. The guide was still under the spider piece and the other lifter still in place.

Then there must have been plenty of warning signs.

Not really, just about everything I have read here about lifters always says its the springs not the lifters.

Your cam prolly looks like this:

Your rockers prolly look like this:

And your pushrods prolly look like this:

Then you prolly have little pieces of lifter scattered about under the spider in your intake and pieces getting lodged in your oil pump/pickup which will lead to a spun rod bearing which leads to a scared crank and a full rebuild... trust me I know. Tear the motor down completely to be safe.
