hmmm.. where to put my cutout? (with a twist!)
hmmm.. where to put my cutout? (with a twist!)
So heres the dilemma.. Hooker LTs, Hooker off road Y pipe, Hooker Cat Back exhaust.... and.. emissions. So I HAD to have a cat in there.. not necessarily in the stock location because i can pull a few legs.. but there had to be one. So i had it put in the I pipe.. pretty much as close as i could get to the Y-pipe which is say 3-6" away. So there really is no room on the I pipe to install this cutout so i was thinking....
Cut the y-pipe down a little and cut the I pipe down a little where they meet to fit the cutout in, clamp it, and use it to bridge the gap between them... think it will work?

Re: hmmm.. where to put my cutout? (with a twist!)
I am buying a cutout that has 3 bolt flanges on either side.. so im going to have flanges put on the ends of the exhaust and y-pipe after they are trimmed to the correct measurement and the flanges will make it much easier to do. I cant move the cat because its in the only place it would fit..
Re: hmmm.. where to put my cutout? (with a twist!)
That may be too close to the oxygen sensors which in turn may result in altered readings - something you don't want.
On my old car, I had it installed on the turn, right before it goes in the muffler. I'll see if I can find a picture for you.

Re: hmmm.. where to put my cutout? (with a twist!)
nice.. i was trying to get it dumped with as little restriction as possible so i was thinking right after the y-pipe on the I-pipe would be good.. thats what alot of people said they were doing.. and my dilemma was the cat was in the way and so i figured before was better then after right?.. wheres the o2 sensor located? and will it only be effected when open?
Re: hmmm.. where to put my cutout? (with a twist!)
im at school right now but when i get out ill get some pictures of everything so that this is easier to draw out and see if it works... i may just go to the exhaust shop put the car on the lift and see what he thinks.. guy is a genuis

thats the best picture i could get for now that shows where my cat is.. you can see the difference in piping color between the y-pipe and exhaust and thats right where i was thinking of putting it.. you can also see the end of the driveshaft so you can really see how short the pipe is after the cat.. Im probably going to go to the shop and see what he thinks but ill get better pictures tonight

Re: hmmm.. where to put my cutout? (with a twist!)
i just read of a few people that are running dual cutouts RIGHT after the headers and on the y-pipes in various places.. I dont know it sounds like it wouldnt be too much of a problem to put it there

It's a proven fact that LT1's need back pressure in order to perform the way they should. I would recommend going with an x-pipe kit so you get the sound and the back pressure. If you just have to get the cutouts, do them near the rear of the car like where the exhaust hooks up.
Re: hmmm.. where to put my cutout? (with a twist!)
then why are so many people running them right after the long tubes and in the y-pipe and such?
with all this debate this cutout is starting to sound like its not worth the trouble.. the way my exhaust is setup i dont think theres anywhere to put it after that cat.. the only o2 sensors are on the headers and after the whole y-pipe there a good 2-3 feet away... i read that the difference in back pressure will only move your powercurve up a little bit so you lose some low end and gain some up high.. but another problem i think i will have is having that section of the exhaust stay together when its 3 different pieces put together.. i guess ill head over to the exhaust shop now and see what he can do
