hmm, why do these 2 Comp ground cams look so different?

Both of these cams were ground by Comp for 2 different "builders". Just wondering why they are so different appearing...not to mention one has a shorter opti dowl pin in it so I'll have to swap them.

Notice the top one in the first pic has a much small base circle, although it has a smaller overall lift than the bottom.
Notice how in between the lopes of the top one is well machined and smooth while the other is rough and unfinished appearing.

Also notice the rear most cam journal is a bit wider/longer than the bottom cam.

2nd pic just shows how the one on the right has a much steeper profile while the one on the left is more fat and maintains lift longer. I don't know much about cam specs, but the one on the left is higher lift and duration than the right.

3rd pic just shows more of how the in between spots and the side of the lopes are rough on one and not the other.

These were both ground in the past 2 months for a 95 LT1, just wondering why so different and if I should be concerned, especially about the different width rear journal?

Thanks

I thought that having that shiny part in the middle meant that it is a billet cam instead of the regular cast. They're both for HR setups? Are the specs a secret?

I was thinking it may be billet, but that cam was cheaper than the other. Both are for the same setup LT1 HR so not sure why one would be billet and cost less.
The shiny one is an LPE 211/219, the other is an LE1.5

one appears to be small base circle...from what i remember about my 2 cams, one was smaller in general. but it was identical in shape to the one that was small base

Yes, the LPE cam is definitely on a smaller base circle.
I just found this on the LPe site, maybe this explains the finished surface:

"All of the Lingenfelter hydraulic roller cams are produced from a hardened steel core with a unique pressed on cast iron distributor gear. This eliminates the need for a special bronze distributor gear, which must be replaced frequently due to the soft material."

So maybe the other cam is not a hardened steel core?? Since its HR it really doesn't need to be.

Ones cast and ones billet. What are the .006 duration #'s on the LPE cam?

the card has the @ .020 #s as 262 / 270 don't see anything about @ .006

Curiosity made me pull out the stock original cam and put it in the line up..now I see the lopes on it are similar to the LE1.5 one, the LPE is just plain thin.
The core part is about 1" in diameter on the stocker and LE1.5, and is only 13/16" on the LPE. The lope base circle is about 1 1/8" on the stocker, 1" on the LE1.5 and 7/8" on the LPE.
Here's the pics of all 3

IMHO one is a billet and one is a cast blank, some stroker motors require a small diameter base circle, but may not be the case here. Call Aaron at Comp Cams he can usually get me an answer. Danny Mc

That's a good possibility. Normally, without clearance problems, you want to maintain the largest base circle you can. This is determined by lobe lilft: more lobe lift (with the peak of the lobe very near the bearing diameter) the smaller the base circle.

Few LE1.5 cams are used in strokers, so the lobe pretty much goes close to the bearing diameter to get best lifter performance/least side loading. Yes, the LE shown is on a cast core. You can get it on a billet steel core, but it costs more.

Have you used this LE1.5 cam yet?

No, I opted for the LPE 211/219 for the street use, decided the LE1.5 wouldn't have enough vacuum if I went back to a tighter convertor for the street and daily driving.

The reason the price was different is because one you paid a reasonable price for, the other is a $250 cam you paid a lot more for.
