Hitting the rev limiter

My roomate has a 94 z with an A4 tranny and when he floors it the pulls hard to the rev limiter and bounces until he lets off the gas and then it shifts. When he drives normal it shifts normally. WTF??

Re: Hitting the rev limiter

Bad tranny. The clutches in it are burnt. That is causeing it to slip when it is floored.

Re: Hitting the rev limiter

if he has gear or a stall that will cause it to bounce the limiter without a tune but if not trans is on its last leg

Re: Hitting the rev limiter

Not trying to start an arguement, but the tranny is controlled bythe computer and will change gears at a certain RPM regardless of the gears or stall

Re: Hitting the rev limiter

You would think so. Ever since I upgraded my gears and TC my tranny will bounce off the rev limiter from the 2nd to 3r shift 2 or 3 times.

Re: Hitting the rev limiter

the gears and stall causes alot of stress on the tranny. the stock tranny cant handle it and starts to slip. it will get worse.

Re: Hitting the rev limiter

Is there anything he can do to make it last longer? is it possibly low on tranny fluid and would that cause the problem?

Wink Re: Hitting the rev limiter

It may be low on fluid. I assumed that had been checked. My bad. If the tranny is going bad..........the only thing that will help it is to take it easy on the gas.

Re: Hitting the rev limiter

thiw may not be related but i hear a shift kit helps strengthen ur tranny, would that help relive some of teh stress on teh tranny from a T/C and gears...or is there no help but a built tranny ?

Re: Hitting the rev limiter

I would jump back in that car at WOT and take it up the RPM band without hitting the limiter and see how it shifts through the gears before ruling out that he has a bad tranny. Is he using Dextron? I dont think he's allowing the tranny enoughtime to shift at high RPM so gets spooked he just lets off. Before my firm shift tune..my car sounds like it was doing the thing as your buddies...I would take it to the limit and since the stock shift is so soft..it kinda takes a few seconds but I wait until it shifts finally. I got sick of that so I did a tune and added a firm shift and my car seems to be WAY better at shifting when progressing to high RPM at WOT. I thought I had a different car...anyhow I use Dextron and I noticed a better shift with it over other brands I have used as well. I would totally try some options before telling him bad news that might not be so sure...
