Every one always says that highway driving is good for a car...but im about to make a trip and would like to know what wears on the engine (ie its components) and tranny while in 4rth gear going 75-100mpg for like 6.5 hrs srtaight. Thanks
the same things will wear on the engine on the highway as they would in normal driving, but they wont be going throught the constant rise and fall in the RPM range as they do in normal driving. Plus, you wont be going for 6.5 hrs straight, youre gonna have to stop at least once for gas. And im assuming you are an auto cuz there would be no reason you would be in 4th if you were an M6.
just make sure all ur fluids are filled and good probally no more wear then normal driving just ads miliage to a car . Normal wear and tear . get a oil change trans flush raditor flush if u havnt done this latley or past it time to be done .
It wont be bad on ur car at all, as long as your cooling system works fine, and you dont overheat, it wont be bad at all. Since you will be running only 2000-2300 rpms most of the way, the engine will not be working as nearly as hard as if you were doing city driving. Just check ur fluids before u leave and you will be cool.
Cold starts cause the most wear on your engine components as there is less lubrication on the moving components. Your engine is also much more efficient when it's up to operating temperature. Check your oil level before leaving and your car will be fine. I'd also check the tire pressure.
I take my 1993 Z28 on trips (for work) from Southwest Florida to New York all the time - even towing boats! That's 1350 miles each way. I make that trip without stopping at all, except for fuel. It's a 22 hour trip each way, keeping the speeds from 75-85 mph.
Never ever had a single problem, but then again, I never ever beat on my car either. I think the LT1 drivetrain is VERY reliable if it's not abused.
