High miles and cam?

my lt1 has 120,xxx miles on it right now, but I really want to put this cam in it. What problems would I run into by doing this on such a high milage car? How could I prevent it?

Too many on the boards here spin bearings all the time when they install cam's in high mileage cars..100k or more...you could install a cam but dont rev it too high or you will run into that problem..

I put the Hot Cam in at 106k and still going for over a year now. Just make sure you have enough oil pressure and you should be good to go.

How much oil pressure is "enough?"

I just put in 1.6 roller rockers @ 107kmiles.. haven't driven it yet tho.. gotta readjust the lash..

Re: High miles and cam?

Damn.. mine is at about 25 at idle and 40 at speed.. I think 50 is the most I've EVER seen out of it.. I hope it hits 60 when I'm at 6krpm, but usually at that point, I don't have the oppertunity to look down at the gauge..

Which sucks, cause I think my top end is ready to rev to 7k now.. but I don't think I have the oil pressure..

Re: High miles and cam?

We put the Hot Cam kit in at a little over 100K miles and now have over 217K miles w/o any problems. Oil pressure at almost 50 at start-up (have aftermarket oil pressure guage) and holds around 30 to 40 psi from idle to cruise. If you take care of the engine, it will do fine. Hope this helps.

Thats the best advice I saw so far, these other guys are isolated. most spin a bearing with a cam install after 100K. Keep in mind you werent there since the beginning for your car so you dont know how it was driven before you came into posession of it. I wouldnt risk it if you dont have the money for a rebuild. Just keep with the bolt ons.

Re: High miles and cam?

Do you concider 1.6 RRs to be in the same league as cams as far as the danger of spinning a bearing it something else nasty in the bottom end?

No done lots of those over 100K, no problem. Although it does increase valve lift its not gonna make a huge increase over stock performance like a cam. With a 1.6 rocker you still wont quite reach .500 lift and youre really in more danger of coil bind than anything else.
