High mileage LT1

hey guys, I have a 96 T/A with 102k on it. I just bought it about a week ago and was wondering if anyone recommends any work done to it to keep it running nice. It has a cai, slp loudmouth, and a b&m shift kit, and I already seafoamed it. I am not planning on building a racer but a car that runs pretty quick for a weekend cruiser. Any recommendation to keep it running smooth for many more miles, I am new to the lt1 scene? Thanks.

Change your fluids religiously. Other than that all you can do is wait for whatever WILL break first.

That is not high mileage, not even close, double that number and you can call it high.

Do you know if the previous owner ever did a distributor cap and rotor? That is probably the single most neglected maintnance item on all the LT1 cars. Resist the urge to use "performance" parts here, the stock cap and rotor are good as is the MSD but the whole MSD opti is a BAD idea, the Accel seems pretty bad too.

The B&M shift kit is not particularly good either.

I am at 165k miles on my '96 TA and I have used Mobil 1 since day 1, and the engine has held up well. Although it does leak a little bit of oil, but I think that is pretty normal for LT1s. If the water pump hasn't been replaced yet it may be getting close to breaking. Keep an eye out for coolant leaks. Enjoy your new ride, its a great car.

I have 103K on my '96 z28 and the car runs as good or better then my '94 with 73K. I wouldn't consider a camaro "high milage" till you hit 200k.

I have 216k on my engine right now, so that should give you a good idea of how high is really high miles. Regular maintenance with quality oils and filters are the key. I would replace the oil and filter, fuel filter, change rear diff lube, opti, plugs and wires unless you know how old they are. Changing tranny and coolant fluids are a good starting point also. Then going forward, you know how long/miles before the next change. These engines are tough, but never overheat them, and do not run them out of gas unless you want to change a fuel pump.

aside from the head gaskets at 186k, adn the opti now at 203k miles. the car runs killer.

if your looking for some other mods, free mods are the best. bypass the tb, descreen the maf.
then look into long tube headers, and ypipe, and a tune. gears make a real nice difference. everybody seems to love the 3.73's with an auto, and a 2800-3000 converter. you could also do 1.6 roller rockers, and lt4 valve springs. and have a very fun daily driver. just make sure you get a tune to maximize every thing.

good luck and have fun

Thanks for all the help. One question, what is wrong with the b&m shift kit? Should i keep it or get rid of it?
