High mileage cam install

I have Lt's Im going to install. I would like to install a cc306 as well. The only concern i have is the engine has about 15x,xxx on it. No knock or anything like that. So any advice on stuff i might want to swap as a precautionary measure would be greatly appreciated.

Im also installing a new oil pump as i think this one is getting tired.

One of you experts has to know something to help me out. I can't afford to blow this motor! A friend and good Lt1 mech i know told me the miles were too high to install a cam. There has to be a way to do this right.

As long as the engine is in good shape,i.e. compression and oil pressure.I think it would be ok.Just use the right springs and change the valve seals.

With the CC306 you will probably want to take out the factory 5800 rpm limit so you can spin it at higher RPM's. When you do this, the 15x,xxx mile main bearings are gonna give up the ghost.
Your center two main bearings are your weak link and will not survive at 6K plus rpms. I have seen severy 100K + mile motors lose the main bearings within a few months of a head/cam swap. If you cannot afford another motor than you might want to leave it alone. If you want to do it right, you could order a rebuild kit, gaskets, bearings and piston rings and tear your engine down and rebuild it in a week-end.

Would this require a little machine work or is it just r+r? How much is a rebuild kit? I have never done anything like this so please bear with me. thanks

the cam swap might actually help
new cam
new lifters
new valvetrain
new gaskets

Revving to 6600 with that cam might prove to be painful though

get the Xe 218

6200 might be less painful

I vote do not do it.

black z is correct. I installed the 230/236 and ported heads. one day i took the car to "only" 6100 rpm and something felt weird. And the car NEVER ran right from THAT point on.

Now it most likely has popped the head gasket, leaked coolant into the oil, ****ing the bearings up and i get to rebuild the motor.

Thanks for all the advice! I wonder where i could get a cheap rebuild kit at How much will this cost me if i do it myself, and is there any machine work required for a basic rebuild?

Sorry to hear that! Have you found a kit for it yet?

125k miles here and about to do homeported heads and a HOTcam as soon as the heads get back from the machine shop. 306 is a little more aggressive though, I don't know, if it was me I'd probably still do it though

I agree with this. My friend just installed a fresh new valve train with the XE 224/230 Cam in his 146K mile LT1. The car seems to have taken really well to the install.

And, I agree with the other statement, the bearings should be swapped as well, they're cheap...so, it's added insurance, I guess.

Yea, I am...I must not have paid attention to the post I was referring to. Well, like I said, added insurance.

i'm just going to ask if you know how to replace cam bearings...

original poster-
Unless you are planning to go through a lot of trouble, i suggest you leave the cam bearings. If anything the "unworn" cam will make up for some of the wear.
