Hesitation up top. opti??

Hesitation up top. opti??

car runs well untill it hits about 4800-5600 then there is a big surge. I would think it is the opti, but i had this problem a year ago when i changed the opti and it was still there after. just recently i changed the opti again (moisture got in and it fried) and i still have the miss. Plugs were changed (ngk tr5s) and wires were swaped (taylors) and nothing changed. Idle is rough as well. Changed the fuel filter, nothing. Could it be a coil? ingnition control modual? fuel pressure reg? Anyone had this problem and its not been the opti??


Hooking up a snap on scanner tommorow and driving, but im up to any suggestions. thanks in advance.

I think the heat has something to do with it. A lot of people are having this problem.

the heat will make it run like a dog, but it still shouldnt miss like it does. maybe ive got a bad injector.

My car has been doing the same thing since last fall.
I changed the fuel filter last fall and it quit doing it.
Now it's doing it again, but it's intermittent.
And I'm not going to start throwing parts at an intermittent problem. One day whatever is going will crap out and I'll know what's wrong.

It could be pretty much any ignition component. The only way to know is to check them all, one by one. My vote goes for the coil though.

could a coil just die up top only? that ever happened to anyone? i figured a coil would be either all on, or all off.

Could possibly be an opti....start with the easiest first...go with a fuel filter...its a cheap easy to replace part and if it hasn't been changed in a year its probably good to do it anyways...could be a fuel pump, or opti...possibly the catalytic converter(s).

is it an auto.......are you sure it is missing.....it might feel like it is because it isn't going to pull like 3000 grand does....but it might not be missing at all. I would scan it if you can.

it idles a little rough, like its got a vac. leak, or a very mild cam, but it does not have a cam (yet) and no leaks. beyond that it pulls hard and strong up untill i hit about 4500-4800 and then it surges, or misses. kinda the same feeling when you run up to the rev limiter. thats about as best as i can describe it without ploping someone in the seat next to me. im gonna try a coil b/c its cheap, and put new injectors in it (svo 24 lbs.) that my friend gave me, they are new in the box. when i put my headers on friday, im gonna change the front 02 sensors and do a leak down test. when i have the rocker arms off for the test ill put in new pushrods and 1.6rr (probably). I checked for codes yesterday and there were none. tommorow ill hook up the computer and drive it, see what happens then.

still see what tommorow brings.

I had the coil go bad on my Caprice. Low RPMs were just fine but as soon as hit 4k or so....sputter. The problem continued to get worse, i.e., the point at which the sputter would occur would begin earlier in the rev range. A new coil fixed the problem.

Coils are inexpensive and if you have a lot of miles on your car...eh, why not?

Hope that's the problem.

I was just going to ask "does it feel like your hitting the rev limiter" and you said "YES" it does! its DEFINATELY the opti then! ive seen it all and thats DEFINATELY an opti issue.. my guess is that you broke one of the two tabs that hold the metal contact on the rotor and soon enough the other tab will break and the car will not run at all! its the opti! just go to autozone and pick up #30-1833 if you have the vented opti! this is their new set and its a FULL cap, rotor, and distributor set for only $130.00 cant beat that!
