Angry Hesitation on highway... HELP!

When i'm doing highway driving i notice a hesitation when I accelerate. Happened numerous times. I'm going probly 60-70 mph. Everytime I notice the problem, I am at the exact same RPM, just below 2000. When I go to accelerate to pass some one, the car stays at that RPM. Didn't matter how much gas I gave it. I let off the gas, and got back on it right away and it downshifts (jumps up to probly 3000 rpms, so i'm assuming its downshifting) and drives fine after that.

The last time I drove it, I ran out of gas. Damn gauge was wrong. So i'm thinking maybe I sucked in some bad gas from the bottom of the tank and I need to change my fuel filter? So the engines not getting enough fuel maybe? I have 120k miles so who knows when it was changed.

Another thing I noticed was my cat. convertor may be clogged. I smelt a weird smell, got out and noticed my cat smoking alot. There was more smoke coming out of hte cat then there was coming out of the tips. But if it was clogged, it should not jump up to 3000 rpm when i got back on the gas, correct?

And my last thought is the tranny. I am praying it is not the transmission. The previous owner had the transmission rebuilt within the last 1000 miles. (probly about 400-600)

Any one have any ideas? Please help. Sorry about the long post, i'm alitlte worried about this.

Either the cat converter, or you have a miss. Either burned plug wire or opti going out. Does it do it throughout the RPM band or just down low? If just down low then it's prolly the CAT

I have this exact problem as well. Happens only on the highway accellerating lightly to moderatly for me. If i push a bit harder it goes just fine. A lot of posts about stumbles and low RPM misses, but it doesnt feel exactly like a miss or stumble, more like its just not wanting to accellerate even though you've pushed the pedal down more.

Have you figured it out yet?

Since its happend to me, I've... rebuilt my engine... replaced TPS, Cleaned the IAC, Cleaned the TB, cleaned the maf and map, had the car scanned (seems to be running lean when the stumble happens), Replaced Wires, Replaced Plugs, Replaced O2's, REplaced Fuel Filter, Rebuilt the Tranny, and Replaced the Fuel pump.

I've tried testing my EGR, I managed to push it in, but not while idling as most pple suggest...
I also want to clean my injectors but can't find the 3m kit out here in Canada (eh), then agian i haven't looked too hard yet
Opti is last resort...

I just want this to go away
