HELP!! Transmition!! (alittle long)

Alright, I was supposed to go then track tomorrow so I figured I'd change the oil and fix the transmition leak I've had for a while. At first I thought it was the shift shaft seal but after closer inspection all I could find was what looked like a leak at the seal. So, I went out, got a seal and filter and pulled the pan. The gasket that was on there was junk, I pulled the filter and when I went to put the new one in it had what looked like a metal flange on the top that the one I took out didnt have. After I tried to put it in with that thing on it, it got pushed down and so I pulled it off and put the filter in. After bolting everything back together I got about 3 quarts of fluid into it before it showed full and started it up. I drove around for a while and everything seemed normal untill I floored it from a stop. Off the line it pulled just as hard as ever but thats when it hit the rev limiter and skipped before shifting into 2nd. When it shifted it didnt feel as hard as usual either.
As long as you dont run it to red line it feels normal but now I can't go to the track and I'm pissed. PLEASE someone tell me what I messed up. If you need any additional information please let me know.

I think I know what you're talking about. The original filter didn't have a gasket (ring up near the top of the tube) and the new one did. It sounds like your original filter pick up tube gasket is still stuck up in the trans. That's why when you pushed the new one up, it pushed the new gasket down. That's if I understand your explanation of what happened. You will probably need to pull your filter back down and look up into the hole. The other gasket is probably about 2-3 inches up there and hard to see. I typically use a curved tip pick to get the gasket out. If this is the case then your shifting problem was probably the pump sucking air at high RPMs. The gasket may be damaged or the ribs on it collapsed, allowing it to work ok under light load but not under heavy load. Good luck

Cals400: I didn't notice it shifting earily, unless the pedal is to the floor it seems normal, although maby a little softer shifting than before.

Kjlvilla: That sounds like a very good solution but I was wondering how this filter worked. The peice I pulled off did indeed have a rubber top to it but I'm not sure it even started to go into the hole, it seemed to not fit in from the beginning. This peice was probabally a half inch long, little rubber at the top and a slight flare at the bottom edge, looking at the spot where the filter goes into the tranny it did kinda look like the thing might fit at the bottom of the tube not the top. also the filter neck has what looks like a stopper at the bottom, I wasnt sure weather this was to stop the filter from going in any further or to stop the metal thing from dropping more. Either way, thanks. That should at least give me something to start with. Anuone else have an idea?

Did you change from regular to synthetic fluid? Sometimes synthetic is too slippery for a somewhat worn transmission.

Nope. Plain ole Quaker State. Does anybody know if not putting enough fluid back in could cause these symptoms? I haven't had the car very long and don't have the full manual for the car yet. (I looked and could only order one) Anyway, I dont have an exact measurement on how much to put in or what kind exactally. Anything specical?

many times putting too much fluid in can cause the early shifting. also, your kickdown cable probally needs adjusted. i am not sure how it works on your car but i know how it works on a third gen. adjusting this solved all of my friends shifting problems after changing his fluid and filter. this cable i would think would be located by your throttle body. there should be three cables there. one is for throttle, one for speed control, and the other is this kickdown cable. this is how it is on a third gen anyway. someone will probally be able to help you with this that has an lt1 A4.

From what I've been told, there is no kick down on a 4L60E. But I could be wrong.
