Help...tick..tick.. after cam install.
Ok here goes. Buddy of mine broke his timing chain. Soo i installed a new timing set, CC 305, CC OEM lifters, Crane 10308 springs, and impala SS head gasket. Well got it all together and it runing fine but i keep getting a ticking sound mainly from the drivers side valve cover. When i first set the rockers i went 1/2 turn past 0 lash. Second time readjusted i went 3/4 turn past, and still had ticking sound. Soo third time i readjusted with the car running. This helped untill i reved it up then i could hear the ticking agian. So this is were i am stumped. The ticking well go away alittle when driving but is still pretty noticable at idle. I can't figure out what is causing this. Never had this problem before. The car runs very strong, but am also picking up 5-7 degrees of knock at WOT. Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks Brad

I have been chasing a valvetrain tick like you are describing. Mine started after an intake rocker arm loosened up, and presists even after changing all damaged valvetrain parts. Mine is loudest at ~2k rpm and have at times seen a constant 2-5deg of knock retard at highway cruise from it. Were any of your parts you installed used?
Mine tick the same. I have cranes and they tick bad enought to make me mad. I have checked them over and over again, and replaced header gaskets and everything. But no, I just turn the radio up a little!
I have stock rockers. I put all new valvetrain parts in, but rockers and pushrods. All pushrods are strainght. I do pick up 5-9 degrees of knock not just at WOT but under a light acceleration. When i pick up knock the counts sometime go up but other times do not. Also at 70mph cruise i have 0 knock but everynow and again i pick up some knock counts with 0 degree's of knock?? Is this false??
Anyone else wanna chim in?
Thanks Brad

Similar, but only when hot...
I have a very similar situation. I did a cam swap (H/C Kit) and have picked of a tick. My tick also sounds like its from the drivers side of the valvetrain. The tick is NOT consistent. It never does it when the motor is cold. As matter of fact, the motor has to be pretty hot to do it and even then, it is still inconsistent...it comes and goes. I have about 4,000 miles on the new setup with no trouble, too. It even still gets over 20 MPG on the highway.
The inside of the valve cover has no signs of contact, and the motor runs strong. Rocker adjustment makes no difference, and like I said, its quiet at startup.
Its hard for me to believe the the sound I'm hearing is a cracked plug, a faulty injector, or an exhaust leak, but those are the next things I'm considering. Oh yeah, I swapped the lifters with Comp 'R's, and it made no difference.
I'd be interested in hearing any suggestions others may have. Its got ME baffled. Good luck with yours...
